Hey SDN,

I'm registered for Biochem in the fall (undergraduate junior) and am hoping for some feedback/info/advice on the course.

How should I prepare myself? What are some efficient methods to study for it? Any good study guides for it? What are some of your experiences with biochem? Any warnings? Any expectations? Etc, etc, etc...

Thanks for any responses,

🙂

Every class seems pretty different

I made sure to draw out pathways over and over and over again. For me, the limit is 4 steps at a time. so I would number the steps, and do them in sets of 4.

If you have to memorize amino acids, do them 2 per day until you get them all.

Understand what is ACTUALLY going on; the concepts are really important, especially with things like the Urea Cycle and 2nd Messenger Cascade systems.

This website is great: http://homepage.smc.edu/schwyter_deborah/C31 pages/MainPages/C31 course outline.htm

And I LOVED this one:http://vcell.ndsu.nodak.edu/animations/

Cute videos make me happy.

It's not very difficult. Don't stress about it (or at least wait until you're actually in the class).

I didn't have any unique study methods. It's quite a bit of rote memorization, so I just read the text, then went through the notes until I had most of it down. Having some background in ochem and molecular bio will be helpful, especially if you already have the AAs committed to memory.

Try Biochemistry for Dummies. It's like 13 bucks.

Did a thing where they crammed two semesters of biochemistry into one semester. **** was memorization, not very hard, simple critical thinking problems. Stuff from gen bio did help as things were not completely foreign. It took time for me to memorize the TCA cycle though. Keep on top of it, don't forget things because it'll be a bitch to remember for the final exam.
