I already took organic I and II and did very well in them. However, I already graduated and it will be three years since I have taken a chemistry course. I have to take biochemistry in the spring semester 2011 for vet school admissions and am a little worried about how far I will be behind. Anyone else in the same position or any advice for me? I am not sure how much biochemistry builds upon organic chemistry. I thought about trying to review a little beforehand.

Thank you

IIRC I used Ochem in Biochem maybe once. And that was extracurricular work just because I saw a mechanism that didn't make sense so I had to go back and learn why it happened that way. I could've just flat out memorized the mechanism but I just had to be an overachiever.

But I think it mainly depends on your prof. My first biochem semester was like an overview and the second one was where the real useful stuff came in (mechanisms, digestion, etc). In fact, I remember nothing from my first semester of Biochem except that sulfide bonding is what occurs when ladies get perms. Kind of like from one of my humanities classes I don't remember a damned thing except my prof's ex-GF's cat was named Munky (was extra credit on one of the tests).

i cant even remember any organic in my biochem class lol nothing super detailed at least. maybe it depends on the prof?

i think you'll be fine! my one piece of advice is to memorize the amino acids (name and structure) before class starts because then you will be ahead of the game and can study other stuff. i'm not sure how other prof's teach bchm but with ours they basically just said learn these amino acids and everything about them asap, it was just expected and then they start going into teaching the rest of the chapters asap. so it would be nice if you already knew them and could start studying the chapters right away. If you dont have time to memorize them before class, at least make the flash cards up so that when class starts you dont waste time making them

i took the whole year of biochemistry and for me, I could've taken it without knowing any organic chem. I waited till i finished ochem only because I thought i had to. but after doing it, i wish i could've taken them both at the same time...when i didn't have a job or volunteer work or club meetings. It was all memorizing the creb cycle and knowing the structures of stuff.

good luck!

I majored in Biochemistry, and unless you are taking some advanced biochem course that deals with enzyme mechanisms (in detail) I can't imagine a whole lot of organic cropping up in biochemistry... the little that does, will most likely either be explained to you, or you will be able to look it up.

I wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks alot guys!

I guess I assumed since biochemistry requires organic chem as a pre-req that it must utilize it.

A logical assumption, but there's no place for logic in course requirements.
