Hello! What does everyone recommend?

I am using First Aid and WORLD Questions as my main source.

but I am afraid it won't be enough.

I am not looking for tons more details, bur rather for something to explain it well so it sticks in my head.

Lippincott's illustrated reviews for Biochemistry. Too detailed to read the whole thing for step 1, but it has good explanations (that seems to be what you're looking for).

First Aid is plenty for biochem (the section is very long), but again, if you really need some text to reinforce topics, the book above is excellent.

Kaplan and RR are both very good for biochem

I'd be surprised if that's not enough, especially for something lower-yield. But if you do want to supplement on something or another that just doesn't stick, I'd +1 what blebb said about RR.

I was a History major in college, so I freaked out about Biochem. I read HY: Biochem x4 and read the major chapters of Lippincott's Biochem x1.

Annoyingly, it ended up being one of my best sections. I probably should have spent more time on other stuff...

I have rapid review biochemistry, and it is a ton more than you need for step 1. I didn't read it all. However, it's not a bad resource to expand on things that are in First Aid.

Are the biochem questions on the USMLE also usually used in a clinical-setting type question?

you can expect every question to be a clinical setting type question.

OP, I'd recommend kaplan biochem notes with Dr Ramon's biochem lectures - they are awesome.

Hey all,

I am currently writing a new biochemistry review book for the USMLE.

I just want to know--what do you want in it? Please give me any feedback that you can think of:

-+/- practice questions
-More clinical correlations
-Real style USMLE questions
-Clinical pearls that you can look out for

Please share your insight.

It's tough because there is so much info out there in biochem, but that should be plenty (depending on your goals). If you want to break 260, yea, you may want to do some more, but I did very well and only used UWorld and FA (for the biochem portion).

No source. First aid is all you need to do exceptionally well on step 1.

I used rapid-review by Goljan and I don't think I missed a biochemistry question on Step 1. Really good, short book.

I find it hard to study subjects like Biochem without context. You might try any number of the flashcards available for Step1 Biochem. They have vignettes on them which give the Biochem some context.

Those 2 sources are enough. FA has pretty much everything and UW does an excellent job of applying the knowledge with a lot of info on the explanations.

So what you're saying is that you haven't taken step 1 yet? First aid and Uworld is all you need. Doing BRS or flashcards for it is insane and a waste of time and effort.

As others have said, first aid and u world are all you need to do well on the usmle. I had a very minimal education in biochem in med school (PBL only education ), in which I read maybe half of the textbook. On my performance chart, it ended up being one of my best sections with an asterisk next to it and everything.

I like Lippincotts (sp?) illustrated reviews for biochem. I actually read through it in a couple of days druing my 5 weeks fo USMLE studying as biochem was one of my weaker subjects (ended with with a 254 overall). I also really liked Medimaps (its essentially a big ass map that touches on a lot of the key points. Good for a quick review.
