Can anyone explain the difference between Cyanobacteria and Nitrogen-fixing bacteria under the common groups of bacteria in Cliffs Biological Diversity chapter. It seems like cyanobacteria are nitrogen fixing bacteria, yet are classified under different groups

Cyanobacteria is a phylum of bacteria, and are (according to wiki) the only photosynthetic bacteria capable of producing oxygen. Yes, they have ability to fix nitrogen.

Nitrogen fixing is an ability that several groups of organisms have, including cyanobacteria as well as other types of bacteria such as rhizobia (they grow on legumes) and green-sulfur bacteria.

Do you really need to understand the subtle differences for the test? No, no you don't.

Keep reading. They go into more detail about nitrogen fixation in the second to last or last chapter where you should know N-fixation steps and whatnot.
