What are some strong programs that are biologically oriented? I've read that WashU is this way, but how crazy-competitive is it to get a residency there? What are some other residencies that lean more towards the biologically philosophy than the psychoanalytical?

If one does do well in med school, has good USMLE scores, etc., do they normally get their first choice of residency, even if that residency is competitive?

Wash U definitely is, but check the old "interviews thread" and that will tell you about a lot of programs in depth - with specifically how bio oriented they are.

Answer to other questions: YES 🙂

Thanks Poety. I am one of the most insecure people ever regarding my abilities. BTW, I think that Simon is a great name. Good luck next year, I'm sure you'll make a wonderful psychiatrist.

Not really. Competitive programs are competitive. If you're good and want a top program, you'll be competing against other good people who want a top program - and lots of them.

You will likely get a strong program - though it may not be your first, if you ranked competitive programs highly.

I believe psychiatry is slowly but steadily drawing stronger applicants, which is good in the long run but it does stiffen competition. Wash U, despite its strength(esp. bio.-oriented psych), should not be considered out of the running for any AMG because of its perceived non-desirable location. But don't get too hung up on any single program...you can do well at many places in psychiatry.

Hi Silas

Thanks about the name 🙂 And I reallydo think you'll be fine in the match. I just went through it and it seemed psych really does look at the whole person and wants people that "fit" more than any other specialty.

As long as you do well in med school and boards, I'm still pretty confident that you'll get one of your top 3 choices~~!! 😉

Back to your original question...

Biologically oriented programs that have traditionally been considered "strong" would include:

WUSTL
Duke
Pitt
Hopkins

I'm sure there are others that are escaping me right now. I may be a little biased on this, but while these programs are competitive, they are not necessarily as competitive as the top-flight programs that provide a broader focus of training (MGH/McLean, Longwood, Columbia, UCLA, UCSF, etc).

BTW, when you say "psychoanalytical", I assume that you mean psychotherapeutic.

I have heard from a few peops that Stanford is very "biologically-oriented."
