hey

hey there. i would recommend cell bio, genetics and plant physiology (although it's not as important, you get question's about it sometimes). But if you've taken the 2 general courses and biochem you should be pretty much set already.

Or what about genetics?

genetics, biochemII, cell bio

or maybe just two of those

actually, topics in biochem II and genetics overlap (at least at my school). In that case i would give the nod to biochemII

try to stay away from taking bio's pass/fail
good luck!

I am thinking of taking cell biology because my professor seems to be making general biology I way too easy. She was going over cellular respiration and macro molecules. Somehow I feel that I am not getting the thorough treatment of the subject that I should be getting. Her exams 20% extra credit!! 😱

I'm taking cell bio right now and I can't believe the detail it contains!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I did learn the basics in bio 1 and 2, but MAN! cell bio is crazy with the details which is good I guess. Not sure if it would have helped that much for the DAT, but I'm glad that I took it since I'm sure it will help during dental school.. I hope so.

Hi everyone. I am taking the DAT in the spring, and I was wondering what upper level biology classes would help significantly with the test. I have already taken the two required classes plus biochemistry. I am going to take one or two bio classes next sem. pass/fail just to help with the DAT. Is cell bio good, ecology, biochem II, plant physiology, etc. What do you all recommend? Thanks a lot.

Chris
Tough question cuz if you've taken mock DAT test you should notice that they only ask several questions not from general biology. Ecology should be best choice.

I wouldn't take ecology. You can read from the Kaplan book for Ecology on your own or from your college textbook (i.e. Campbell). I never took and ecology course and just did about 2 days of self study on the topic.

I would recommend an upper division genetics course.

Yes, cell biology is a monster and filled with lots of painful details. I found, however, that it did help me in that it enabled me to fire of answers to mundane questions relating to cell/organelle function, routine genetics, and so on. The biology section of the DAT is designed with the goal that everything you need to answer the question with was given to you during your first year in biology. The trouble comes from the fact that the field of biology is very large and that expanse of knowledge is captured and exploited on the DAT. With that in mind I would suggest that you take courses in areas that you know will give you a challenge and will cover areas (albeit in greater depth) found in the DAT, such as cell biology and genetics. Personally, I wouldn't recommend taking biochem for the sole reason of the DAT as it won't help you much with the test, although more and more dental schools are or will be requiring it as a pre-req. Just a thought. Best of luck in the spring!
