If 32-P is used to label both strands of double stranded DNA, after two rounds of replication, four double stranded molecules of DNA are produced. Of these............????????

so would the answer be......
all four strands have the 32p with half of them?
Im confused about how Kaplan words the answers. The correct answer was (2 of 4 double-stranded DNA molec. have it, each with half of the 32p)

I have another question as well.
What's up with the different blood types.

--A person with type AB can recieve blood from types A,B,O
but a person with AB can only donate to types AB only

So does that mean that a person with type A can only recieve and give to types A?
.........................................................B.................................................B?
........................................................O.................................................O?

are these right?

For the DNA question, because DNA replication is semi-conservative, so the answer should be 2out of 4 will have the label, and each with half of 32-p. I can put it this way, u have a double DNA label RED, after 1 replication, there will be 2 DNA double strands, each one have 1 RED (cuz of semiconservative) , after 2 replication, there is still 2 RED strand out of 4 double strand DNA.

For the blood type question, you have to know blood AB have genotype of IaIb, and therefore can recieve from all type of other blood. For blood A, which have genotype of Ia i, or IaIa, it can recieve either type A with Iai or IaIa or type O which have genotype of ii.. same for the other type of blood. (as long as the genotype of the donate blood doesnt conflict with genotype of reviever blood.) But type A cant recieve from type B, cuz type B is either Ibi, or IbIb, which the Ib will be recognized as foreign in type A blood individual.

Hope this make sense.

AB = universal receiver
A = can get blood from A and O only
B = can get blood from B and O only
O = can only get blood from O... also its a Universal Donor

since DNA is semiconservative in replication and the original DNA has 32P...Then before replication both strand has 32P. After one round of replication you should have 2 dbl DNA now. Each daughter should have 1 strand with 32P and another strand of new DNA. And after another round of replication now you have 4 dbl DNA, but still only two of the strands will have the 32P

For example. let X be the 32P strand and Y be regular DNA

Before
XX

First Round
XY XY

Second Round
XY YY YY XY

As you can see?....

Hi,
For the DNA question....how do you know if DNA replication is semiconservative replication ?? it could be dispersive replication or Conservative replication ?? If you can please clear up my confusion !! thanks..

Maybe I dont know enough, but i always thought DNA replication is semiconservative.. so everytime i see a question about DNA rep, i assume🙂 it that way..

For the DNA question, the answer is right, DNA replication is semiconcervative and that is what when the first (parent)strands are labeled with P32, the strands that will arize as a result od DNA replication will not be labeled, and since each of the parent strands serves as a template for DNA synthesis, out of the resulting 4 strands only 2 will be labeled, which are the parent strands. Here is a link to the Messelson and Stahl experiment that proved that DNA replication is semiconservative.

Hope it helps,
Good luck.
