I am looking for some insight into which lower division biology classes to take. Im an engineering major so I am just trying to fufill the requirements. I have taken general bio and am not sure what to take for my second course. Some have said zoology and some botany. I just dont want to waste my time and money learning something that I wont need.
thanks in advance

take cell biology and genetics

I vote for Cell biology, Molecular Biology, or Microbiology 😀 (in that order). [Don't take virology or any science classes that are too specialized.]

I enjoyed Systems Physiology, kinda.

Cell Biology - At my institution half of the course is molecular genetics and the other half of the course is just more detailed information on the cell. It was very interesting and is my favorite science course so far.

cell biology definitely. Go check out what your school's biology requirements are. That should give you a better idea of what to take.

At my school, physiology and cell biology cover the same requirement.

So I chose physiology, because I think it is far more helpful for the MCAT. Cell biology is also important, but I think that it is covered much more in other subjects. Of course in your case, I would still recommend physiology. Figure out what you would enjoy more and take it. From your intro bio class you should know what you find more interesting.

Oh yeah... Don't take botany.

don't take botany and ecology stuff unless you're really interested. the suggested upper level bio classes to take are:

1) biochem (not necessarily both semesters unless you really want to and are sadistic, which is me)
2) cell bio
3) genetics
4) anatomy
5) physiology
6) pharmacology
7) medical terminology

basically, anything that you'll go over again in med school is a good choice. remember, these upper level bio classes can vary from applicant to applicant and this is a good way to boost both GPA and BCMP GPA.

No offense to the takers/majors here, but screw zoology and botany, imo. Picking whatever you need from the above list (and with the addition of pathophys) should suit you well.

Who would want to take botany? Its probably one of the most boring bio subjects out there. 🙄

Hey, lay off. I took Botany... alongside an upper Genetics class. I'm interested because I love gardening and do Bonsais.
Some schools don't accept Botany as a biology requirement so avoid it. Personally, I'd say Genetics because there are a few pedigrees on the MCAT which will prepare you for it. To be safe, you'll need 8 credits with at least one lab (did you take the intro bio lab?). Finally, a few schools (I know UMich for one) require Biochemistry on top of the other biology and chemistry requirements. I guess some folks aren't big fans of biochem (I'm a biochem major so I don't understand why), so maybe put off biochem until you know you're applying to a school that requires it?

I still think plants are boring.

Anyway, if I were to take a class called moleclar biology & biochemistry, would that satisfy the biochem requirement (Its a full yr course like Ochem)?

Hmm, not sure, as most of my courses are very semester-based. How many total credits would that be? As said, you'll need 8 credits of biology, followed by biochemistry. Is the course divided into biology first sem and biochem the second? I'd ask you school's advisor who will be more familiar with your school's courses.

Its 3 credits each for molecular bio & biochem I and molecular bio & biochem II.

I am a non-trad (chem engineer) and took two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology. Be careful with these because some schools require 8 semester credit hours of "general" biology and the A&P classes sometimes will not count. So now I am going back to take Gen Bio I and II, which sucks because I all ready took the MCAT and did decent in the BS section (10).

This is the case with most Texas schools, and many others, I'm sure.

My A&Ps are bio electives, not "general biology."
