Here I am with my incessant questions again but it seems like every day I have a new one since I decided to make my dreams reality in this lifetime.

I am an exercise science major which means in addition to the pre-req's for entrance to med school I take allot of physiology, kinesio and biomechanics classes. However I am in the College of Health and Human Services, not the Arts and Sciences college where most traditional "Biology" pre-med majors reside. So I know the professors in my department obviously I see them all the time and next year I would have no problem asking them for LOR's, but I'm told by my advisor that the schools want LOR's from prof's in Chem/ Ochem and Biology mainly.

So, does this mean that lor's from my physiology instructors are no good? I mean I would consider that a biological science even more relevant than Biology. And if they are no good then How on earth do I go about getting LOR's from my chem and bio instructors when I am one of 200 students in a class, the labs are taught by grad assistants and I am not even a member of the college that they teach in. I mean how do I build a relationship with these people adequate enough to get a decent LOR?

Any input would be much appreciated

don't worry...you're like many others. you will NEED at least one from a science professor. they understand your situation. they know about med school letters...you won't be the first student they write one for. you think they know all the students who a bio majors...yeah right!

so you kindly approach one that you received a good grade in their class and ask them if they will write you a favorable letter if you give them a "packet" of info on yourself. sure the letter won't be as good as one they can write for a TA or something, but you need to do this. if it is for this cycle, you need to get on it. kindly tell them you need it in 30 days or so. this way you can still do secondaries and the med schools just keep your file open until the letter comes.

i got some awesome letters from my exercise sci professors. i also got one of my best letters from a human anatomy/phys professor who was from a lecture hall outside of my major as well.

when i say "packet" of info, i mean like a cv/resume, essays about you (aacomas/amcas, secondaries, maybe a transcript, etc). a professor can write a nice letter from this.

not everyone can be a TA for ochem...so don't worry

Thanks for the advice. No worries, It's not for this cycle, I'm only a sophomore kind of..... I have taken most of my ex science classes, but because I waited to make up my mind I am beginning the pre-req's now. So I will not mcat until not this april but next April. I am just trying to plan ahead since I am in Bio and Chem now. Somehow ironing out plans all the time relieves my anxiety about jumping through all these hoops and that enable me to continue getting my A's. Okay so I might be getting a B in Cardiac Dysrhythmias this semsester........ 👎 I hate B's, but the upside is I learned a ton about the heart and dysrhythmias as well as clinical correlations, signs and symptoms and treatments, A fascinating class that I can't manage to get above a 90% in, which is a B on this teacher's grading scale, not even a B+ but a B.

Geese ther I go again.....stressing the B, when that's not even what this thread is about

don't worry about the cardiac class...no school is going to care about it. strive for As in the 4 major sci.

i didn't know you had this much time...here is what you do. GO TO OFFICE HOURS periodically througout the semester. introduce yourself. ask ?'s about course content and shoot the breeze with them. they usually like students.

i actually wouldn't make it known to them that you want to go to med school in the beginning either. if they ask of your future plans...tell them you're unsure. this way, they won't think you're just kissing ass the whole semester for a letter.

then you can come back a couple months after the class and be like, "i've decided to pursue medicine as a career". believe me, they'll remember you and should be more than willing to do that letter

Thanks for the advice, Sometimes I feel like I missed the class on calculating the correct sequence of hoop jumping to get into med school without having a heart attck as a pre-med, LOL

You have been awesome in answering my ?'s over the past few days since I discovered this forum.
