One of the zoo externships I did during my fourth year coincided with their annual "catch all the lorikeets, examine and get blood" days. Two days of getting bit by those little effers. I always cringe in the lorikeet house when parents try to comfort their children that they won't bite when they're feeding nectar. Like hell they won't. 🤣

I'm so amused by this thread because irl I notoriously hate birds as patients (reptiles 4 lyfe ), but I really like birdwatching so I guess it evens out.

While in Florida I saw so many birds and lots of reptiles (a fair few gators!). And one outline of a manatee which made my trip. I’ll look for photos to share later 🙂

In order (from left to right and row by row): Wood Thrush, Male Common Yellowthroat, (same Male) Common Yellowthroat, Gray Catbird (with good guy Jeremy), Me extracting the Gray Catbird from the net, Me holding the Gray Catbird in the Photographer's Grip (first bird I ever held in the hand in the wild!, photo cred goes to my bf Alan), (extremely nippy) Female Brown-Headed Cowbird, Male Magnolia Warbler, Beautifully barred House Wren, same House Wren but front view (see the tick?). The first MAPS banding of the season was slow af. We had 11 newly banded and 5 recaps. Robins, Swainson’s Thrush, Yellow Warbler, our regional type of Chickadee, Rufus Hummingbird, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, House Wren, and I believe a Bewick’s Wren.

That's so cool that you guys get to band Hummingbirds!!! Don't you need super special licensing for that?

Yeah we have the permits. There is also a specific hummingbird project going on, though I’m not involved with that one.

I’m supposedly supposed to get trained on how to band hummers this season, fingers crossed it actually happens!

Bumping this thread to share the fledglings I found in my neighbor's front yard

Four little birb babies sittin on a rock

Three little birb babies sittin on a rock

Two little birb babies sittin on a rock
…and then they flew off at the same time so I don't have one of one birb baby.
It was super cute when each one flew off because mom was right nearby and she would bring them a treat when they finally flew.

I have no idea what they were and I didn't get a picture of mom to compare. Definitely not robins though.

After some googling I think mom looked like a western kingbird, but I don't think she had a yellow chest/belly. I could be mistaken though because she stayed far away from me while I was taking pictures.

Edit: ehhh maybe not? She was brown pretty much all over with long, darker brown tail feathers. Probably 6-10 inches from beak to tail.

Brought in an injured juvenile robin to the local wildlife clinic today. I think window strike. I only noticed the bird after coming back from walking my dog and seeing one of my cats acting really weirdly around our front window. Turns out she was very interested in the injured birdie on the other side

On vacation and got to see Gracie the trumpeter I used to work with. Her partner Chuck was shot and killed not that long ago. And on a different refuge one of her cignets (after they were grown they moved) was also shot and killed. I hate people sometimes.

She was hanging out right by someone's door. I also saw a river otter out on the frozen lake enjoying a delectable catfish. And got to see some of the rehab raptors I used to do presentations with. Aquila the blind golden eagle will always be my favorite
