This is probably a really weird question. I'm wondering if you have to submit a birth certificate when you enter dental school? Thanks. 😀

I only know one person who would ask this question.....Obama? Is that you?

Hahahahaha 😀

The reason I ask is because I'm in the process of applying to hpsp. But my parents are against me going to military, so they wouldn't give it to me... I was hoping that if I need it for dental school, then they would have to. 😛

Considering that to receive HPSP you must be a US citizen, I'm sure you'll need some proof of US citizenship. I would guess that you'd be able to use your passport, though. The only experience I had with this was in college...my undergrad allowed me to use my passport to prove that I was a US citizen before receiving federal student aid. If I didn't have to get out my naturalization certificate to prove I was a citizen, I'm sure a passport will suffice for anything the dental school asks you to submit. Military I'm less sure about, but a passport is an official document, so it might be okay. I'd ask your recruiter, though.

They asked for birth certificate specifically, but I'll check with my recruiter. Thanks 🙂

Oh well then you might actually need your birth certificate. That's a specific request. I think otherwise they'd just ask for "proof of citizenship" or something like that.

I don't know what to tell you about telling or not telling your parents, but I don't think you should keep the truth from them. They'll find out eventually anyway.

Why are they against you going military?

Barack Obama was born in Kenya.

Because they would worry. Period. I haven't been able to have a reasonable discussion with them yet. Honestly, I haven't made up my mind 100%, but I want to keep this option open, which would mean I really need to work on the application. Grr, this is frustrating.

I wasn't born here in the US so I don't know how all the Birth Certificates thing works but if you are over 18 I suppose that you can ask the government for a copy of your Birth certificate, can't you?

Ah, problem is, I am also not born in the US. 😛

Yeah, I asked my recruiter about the requirements and he specifically said he needed my birth certificate as well as my passport.

Ironically, I'm actually joining the military BECAUSE I don't want my parents to be more worried about how much debt I'm about to take on. As conservative asian parents, all they assume about "dentists" are that they are well off and making bank. They don't realize just how enormous tuition loans + interest rates are.

How did you manage to persuade your parents? Because my conservative asian parents are certainly freaking out... My parents actually offered to help out, but it's their life savings and I really don't want to use it.

Hehe, trying to convince overprotective meddlesome parents to let you join the military when we're a country that likes to go to war?
Tough sale... Could always ask for the certificate and apply for the NHSC. That might make them happier....

Make an excel spreadsheet. Just pick a school and calculate the costs. do the math for repayment (don't forget to subtract the cost of health insurance and stuff!), throw in a 2 year residency, and show them that you'll be like 38 by the time you pay everything back.

Compare that to a nice spreadsheet of how life would be if you paid off your service-debt by age 29 via Navy. Show them how much money you'd have in your bank account.

Parents like spreadsheets - I showed mine to my conservative Asian parents and they gave me the thumbs up.

Or just say that your current university needs a copy of your birth certificate to apply for graduation this may or something like that.
