Hi,
I've posted here before about MD/PhD looking at ENT as a career. I am in the latter stages (3rd year) of the PhD, having already completed Step I.
At our program, we can rotate back into M3 at the beginning of any rotation and can jump from group to group if we want to change the order of our M3 schedule. My original intent was to rotate back in September 2008, finish M3 in September of 2009, do an elective in ENT/away rotation/research to gain experience and LORs from the ENT field, and interview in December-January.
Here is the problem...it is very likely that my paper won't be published in time to make the September deadline...it is entirely possible that my thesis defense may get pushed back until after December.
You can see the conflict here. I can rotate back into M3 all the way up to March of 09 and still match in March of 2010, but the window to do ENT specific work is gone (in other words I would do M3 and interview immediately, no Step II, no ENT electives/research). The other option is to wait until the following August, come into M3 with the new class, and match in 2011. Obviously I don't want to spend an extra year because of what amounts to an extra month or 2 of lab work to finish up this project.
I guess I may be stuck here...I certainly don't want to interview with zero ENT experience. I am having a committee meeting on Monday to discuss this issue...perhaps they will let me take a break in my M3 year to do ENT electives/research after the surgery rotation.
Any thoughts are appreciated as to how to proceed!
