I've got a problem! I went to macy's a few months ago at their massive 2 suits for the price of one sale and I didn't have any idea what color suit i would need for the interview. So i ask the 'specialist' there and keep telling him its a med school interview and i need the right suit, black probably, maybe navy blue. So the guy tells me, "Definitely black and youll want one brown suit'...WHAT?? He said since im of south asian descent, brown would go best with my skin and I said, are you sure?? and he said 'yes, certainly'.

Now, i find out that even black suits are wrong and brown is suicide! They are both from big companies and normally go for around $350, $400 but they cost me 400 total for both. What should I do? I'm trying to sell the brown suit but I havent found any buyers and I'm wondering if i should go out and buy a navy blue suit now. I'm a borderline applicant, 29Q and 3.65gpa, no amazing extrac's, never climed mount everest or even mt. st. helens. should i blow some more money on the navy blue? btw, anyone want the brown suit? 🙂

are you crazy? they are just colors. it's not like any of them are bright. and black is definitely a popular color at med school interviews. i'm sure that if the brown color goes well with your skin tone, their is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

wait a minute...why are you saying it's totally wrong now? Who told you that now? I doubt there is a right protocol. Just wear a dark conservative suit with a coordinating neatly pressed shirt and tie, and you'll be fine. Even if you decide not to wear the brown one now, keep it; you'll have other occasions to wear it.

a black suit?! are you crazy. Adcoms press the Auto-reject button if they see you wear one of those things. Sorry, and brown is even worse, they won't even let you in the building with that crap on. Try to buy a suit like what Deion Sanders would wear, hat and everything. You will look supafly and really impress adcoms.

also, if you didn't tailor the brown suit, you can probably return or exchange it. just bring the receipt and the tags.

i heard top hats and canes are also appropriate with the full tuxedo.

umm, i don't know where you got your information. at the one interview i had, every girl there was wearing a black suit (except for me, mine is gray). i think you're worrying too much about the wrong aspects of interview day.

I think you'll realize when u go on interviews that your suit of choice will be if you wanna blend in with the crowd or if you wanna be unique. You'll see a lot of people in black/dark suits but there will always be someone with a crazy different color. It's pretty much what you want your interviewers to get from your personality etc...

For guys to play it safe would be a Charcoal/Navy...There are a lot of Black suits out there but these guys look like they're goin to a wedding...

My boss once told me that the CIA did a study on what color suit had the best results in helping to build rapport with informants and navy blue was at the top of the list while black was at the bottom. I dont know if what he told me was a crock of $hit but I followed his advice and Ive had pretty good interviews so far 😀.

I have a VERY dark brown suit that I wear with a cream colored shirt, gold& blue tie. It looks smart and has brought me good luck and more than a share of nice compliments from the Adcom peeps/interviewers.

The point is to look GOOD in whatever you wear.

I wore a black suit with a gray shirt/reddish tie. I think you shouldn't be worried about it too much. Just go in there and be comfortable and confident that you're gonna be a great physician and you'll really add something to the class. You're gonna be trading in your suit for a white coat anyway, right?

Have you got nothing better to worry about than the color of your suit?

It's either that you really have nothing else to worry about and decided that it will make you feel better if you did have something to worry about -- or you're just totally anal!

I will go with the black suit btw.

my philosophy on the suit is that we are college kids, we have no money, best to stick with what works. the kids at interviews ive seen in black suits look nice and the kids with striped or grey or otherwise suits can tend to look like theyre wearing cheap suits. if the black or the brown suits are sharp, who cares? as long as youre not wearing a "no fat chicks" t shirt its probably not going to matter anyway

I think black is just fine. I wear a grey tweed suit with a pink shirt but at nearly every interview I've had the uniform seems to be black suit blue shirt (for boys: with a blue tie). I was so weird by NOT having a black suit that at one school the dean of students walked in and said "hmm... a gray suit" then walked out. (this IS a school you would know not an obscure one)

Moral of the Story: Black is fine. Dont worry. Wear what you like.

black suits are fine. i got accepted to med school and i wore a black suit at my interview. dont stress over it.

Last interview I had at a top 10 medical school the first thing the faculty interviewer said was "You guys look like a damn funeral procession all wearing black suits..." Just a thought

/kids at other schools get a kick out of that quip, even if it isn't mine

Does everyone wear a white shirt? I really prefer blue shirts myself--either solid blue shirts or shirts with a sublte weaved pattern--especially with the navy suit I plan to wear.

I also suggest French cuffs. They're just much more refined, and then you get to wear cufflinks too. I got cool Frank Lloyd Wright cufflinks from the MOMA store. They're super cool and they don't make you look like a heal.

But seriously, do you think I can get by with a blue shirt?

cool. i think any conservative light colored shirt is fine. That's my personal opinion. I'm considering a navy suit with a light blue shirt and multi blue colored tie.

How about Colonel Sanders? You can dye your hair white and bring a bucket of fried chicken to the interview. Then you'll stand out for sure.
