these blackberry devices seemed to be strapped to the hip of every med student these days, it is extremely annoying to be trying to teach something, then they pull out the damn blackberry and read an email- worse yet they respond.

this is a nice toy, but have some respect for your colleagues, patients and most of all- yourself.

wait til a discrete time to look at your messages and respond.

i think i am going to ban them on my service

Are you sure they're checking e-mail? Most of the time I'm using my BB in clinic I'm looking up drugs or checking a reference. Although, I totally agree that they shouldn't be typing away for any reason while being addressed.

I agree with the general sentiment (I often cringed as a 4th year when my classmates were rude enough to whip out their Blackberries/iPhones in front of patients/bedside rounds) but there are times when those devices are invaluable

I still remember being stuck in rounds on Black Monday. The 1st (and hopefully only) time I checked my email in front of a patient
