in order to break the monotony of similar threads, i wanted to post the pics i took of the Blacksburg area after my interview at VCOM. i didn't take many pics of the VCOM building itself, because, like both LECOM buildings, it was just your standard generic DO building (very nice on the inside), but 3-4 stories high on a piece of land. Pretty much what you see on the website is what you get. i took pictures of the surrounding area to get a feel for what it would be like to live in the area.

1. Christiansburg- this is the 1st town off the exit from the airport. even though it is technically a seperate town, it's only 5 mins away down mainstreet and the area where most VaTech people do their non-grocery shopping. as you can tell by these pics, it's your standard suburban-type new strip mall developments. a Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's (i think, i forgot), chain restaurants, etc. There's even a small mall with a theater playing movies.

2. Blacksburg- a small collegetown. Here are some pics of main street. don't let the multitude of pictures fool you. this was literally 2 blocks of bars/restaurants in the "downtown" area, just taken from different angles. these 2 blocks are right next to the entrance of the VT campus. VCOM is located on the far end, closer to Christiansburg.

3. VT campus- not too many pictures here, but a nice campus. Kind of small for a public school (same size as FSU, for you floridians, i'm thinking)

all the buildings look like this

i like this idea, cool pictures of the area! Thats all i really wanted to say.

👍

VT is a nice campus in itself. The only problem is that some of the dorms seemed to be a hike to class...others weren't too bad. It is hard to compare it to the FSU campus though because VT has the huge open space in the middle, and the administration building isn't built into the stadium. FSU also is just kind of weird in the layout. I think VT made a little more sense as far as colleges go. 😛 I'm sure my girlfriend, the fsu girl will be mad at me now...but hey I almost did corp of cadets at vt so I may be a little bias.

Blacksburg I'm not sure about it too much...I wasnt legal when i was last there, but it doesn't seem like the bar scene is as hopping as apartment parties and stuff. Just go to college humor and seems like 1 out of every 3 pics comes from VT apartment parties....

well, it really seemed like there were only a handful of bars in that downtown area. i'm sure there are more scattered throughout the town. i know people go to Buffalo Wild Wings, which is just down the street from the downtown area. But, like i've stated, compared to gainesville, tallahassee, athens, knoxville, or austin (collegetowns i've been to), blacksburg seemed like it was much smaller.

i'd say it is more along the lines of auburn in terms of size. on the good side, the housing was dirt cheap and definitely a plus 👍

Great idea to post. I love the pictures.🙂

main street isn't that big though. there are probably just over 10 bars, so they really do get crowed, especially during football season. it used to be hard to keep a buzz b/c it took so long to get drinks... which is why i went out during the week and partied at home on fri/sat. i just don't think many people take cameras into bars.

I have to agree with the mainstreet, there is not much for bars, but there are others on the sidestreets one block up and down on either end of the road for about 3 or so blocks, I don't drink so I can't find much for that thoiiough. They are finally building a new movie theater in C-Burg at the mall so that should be nice when you get the time 🙂 Any other questions on B-burg or the school, I am a 2nd year at school. 😎

I think tallahassee sucks for partying if you are on FSU campus. You have Bullwinkles or whatever and that is it.lol Gotta drive to a lot of decent places it seems....then you go a block or two down in one direction and you are in a somewhat shady area of tally, up and you are into a few apartment complexes, some railroad tracks, and florida am. Of course I have never been a fan of FSU (although the medschool looks really nice) so that may be why.lol A PSU student from FSU territory. 😛
