I am not a student or a medical professional, not sure if I could ask questions here, but asking it anyways !

I was trying to draw blood myself as I can't donate blood for having been in UK (Mad Cow Disease threat). I am doing this in order to reduce the haemoglobin levels.

I used a 19G butterfly needle with tube, followed the proper procedure to puncture the vein in my left arm and saw the flash, I could see the blood in about half inch of the tube, then there was no flow. I am not dehydrated, my blood pressure was normal, yet there was no flow which suprised me. Fisting my hand made the blood flow about an inch further in the tube, then relaxing the fist sucked back the blood from the tube !

What am I doing wrong ? Could it be because the other end of the tube must be connected to a bag or syringe tube with vacuum ? I had the other end of the tube dangling in a glass measuring jar. Could that be the reason why ?

I have tried to look for empty IV or blood bags, I couldn't find any online. Does anyone know where can I buy in Canada online or in-store ?

Thanks for any help.
