I just got a new Palm Pilot for Christmas and it has Bluetooth capabilities, but I don't know how it works.

Do you have to subscribe to Bluetooth to get the internet? If so, how much is it and where do I go???

Thanks!

All I know about Bluetooth is that it allows me to wirelessly sync my palm pilot with my laptop through the infrared port.

Unless you also have WiFi on your palm, you cannot connect to the internet. Bluetooth is a wireless signal designed to link items such as keyboards, cell phones, pdas, your mouse...etc...

I think I have WiFi too, so how do I get internet access. Do I have to subscribe to something?

Wrong. You can connect your PDA to a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone and surf the internet.

It requires that you purchase an internet plan with your cell phone provider.

I do it all the time, including signing into AIM. I have an hp iPAQ 4155 and connect to Cingular with a Motorola V600 phone.

The OP didnt mention anything about using Bluetooth and a cell phone. Using just bluetooth, you cannot connect to a wireless network to access the internet.

Moni, if you do infact have wifi, you will need to be in an area that has a wireless network signal present. From there you can configure your network settings to allow you access.

Check out this guide for a walkthrough on setting up your PDA

I thought that if your PC has bluetooth as well, you could actually surf the net via the bluetooth connection. I don't have bluetooth on my PC yet, but I'm going to get a dongle for my laptop this weekend. So please, if I'm wrong, correct me quickly before I spend money I could use somewhere else.

Gatorade, the IR port has nothing to do with bluetooth. I also currently sync my ppc via IR, and have never turned on the bluetooth on the ppc to sync. Bluetooth on your ppc sucks the battery quickly.

Hmm. I wonder what the Bluetooth on my PC is good for then. 😕 I have an IBM T41. If anybody knows what I can do with it, please, feel free to enlighten me.

Yes, you can. It's difficult to set up though.

Okay, I took the time to actually find out the type of PDA I have. Mine is the PalmOne Zire72. Does anyone know how this model works???

Blue tooth allows you to connect to other blue tooth capable devices. This means you can connect to your cell, provided it is blue tooth compatable, and establish a wireless connection to the net.

I have no use at this time for bluetooth. I just use Wifi for synching and the net.

So is it worth it to buy a Blue tooth USB adapter to use my internet connection from my laptop??? How does that work?

Sorry guys, sooo many questions, but I'm new to this PDA technology and just trying to figure things out.

Bluetooth is essentially a two-way radio connection between any two devices that are bluetooth equipped. It's basically a way for 2 devices to "talk" to eachother. If anything, I'd suggest you invest in a bluetooth equipped cellphone if you want to get online pretty much anywhere. Your PDA would interface with the cellphone which would be dialed into an ISP that you'd have to pay for.

If you're a picture person, the communications involved look like this:
ISP <--phone call--> Bluetooth Equipped Phone <--connects to via bluetooth--> Bluetooth Equipped PDA

For further reference:
Bluetooth
Wi-Fi

Is that possible? If I buy a Bluetooth adapter for my laptop would I be able to surf the net with the laptop's connection?

Thanks

Bluetooth range is limited to about 6 feet. I can't see why anyone would want to do that. If you're 6 feet away from your computer, I suggest using the computer for internet access.

The reason that many PDAs have Bluetooth is for connection to various Bt enabled peripherals, such as keyboards, headphones, etc. Also, Bt is a better option for wireless synchronizing, because the devices have to be "partnered" manually. If you have WiFi synchronization enabled, and you didn't do it properly, I could synch my PDA to your computer if we were on the same network (ie. in school, or the hospital). That's a bad thing.
