Hello all,

I am a PGY 1st year in an IM program in the midwest and am curious to hear if there are any EPs who finished a residency in IM or FP or other specialties and reapplied to EM successfully? I originally applied to EM, didnt match, and had to scramble for an IM spot... I do like IM and the people in my program, and I tried to move forward and "play the cards I was dealt", so to speak, but I cant help but feel that my personality and interest are more suited for EM... Its something I still think about everyday

I am considering critical care, but there are certain things that I miss about EM which CC doesnt provide...

I know that Im a newbie resident and my feeling on this will probably change later on. However, it would be comforting to know that re-applying to a 3 yr EM residency in the future would be an option if Im not happy with IM

Thanks!

If you want to do EM, jump ship now. There are people that have done two residencies, but why duplicate and do two?

If you are going to finish IM, then do a fellowship, rather than start over. GI, Cards...IM has some excellent subspecialties.

Either make the lateral move to EM now, so as not to waste three years, or complete IM and build on it with a fellowship, rather than throw the three years away and re-train.

That's just my opinion.

Plan to stay in IM, but simultaneously try to transfer to EM. If you can get out of IM now, do. If you can't, finish up and either try EM again or do an IM fellowship.

Just to play devil's advocate here. As far as the time investment goes, it's no different doing IM to EM than it is for IM to GI or Cards.

I definitely agree with trying to make the move now. But if EM is the only thing that the OP wants to do, there are worse ways to do it than after doing IM.

Thanks for the replies...

As far as trying to switch now, Ive been told that its next to impossible to do in-house at my hospital... and I worry that having to get a letter from my PD and go through the process of reapplying-- It would burn some bridges and make the remaining years I have in IM, if having failed to match EM again, total hell... I am going to research the possibility of making the switch now, I just assumed that it would be more difficult and risky to switch now rather than to finish IM and apply later
