Guys help me answer this q .. Name all the diseases that could cause body odor (not only bad breath or breath odor) in a 43 year old female who asked me this q.
Ill start: 1)PKU -musty odor. 2)renal disease- uremic frost or ammoniacal odor
3)MSUD- urine smells like maple syrup. 4) falsely believing that one emits an odor.

I think there are some cancers that cause breath odor, I can't think of what they are.

Oral Cancer? 😕 😉

1. Diabetes
2. Open wound particularly if anaerobic infection
3. Trimethylaminuria is an interesting one. It is an inborn error of metabolism. Also called fish odor syndrome. These people truly smell terribly to the point that it can affect daily living.

diet high in garlic! (i.e. people who take garlic supplaments for high cholesterol)

-People who go on Atkins smell (ketone bodies) after awhile
-Eating too much Olean or other fat substitutes can cause oily flatulence that smells terribly (I know this clinically, not personally)
-White Castle?

Ok, thought of some more (no cheating!)

-Fugal infection of the skin (feet, using food around the vagina, etc...)
-Bacteria on the skin

How about a woman approaching menopause or early menopause and she senses a change in her(total body) smell or scent due to estrogen fluctuation?. Has anyone come across this? Thank you guys for the quick response. Im trying to beat this into the ground.

G.I.- Zenker's Diverticulum- Food/etc will get caught in the pouch. Patient will present with bad breath.

On that show "House" they made pheo the cause of someone committing murder.
So Id watch that one.

haha. a friend was telling me that the case presentations on that show were actually realistic. I find it hard to believe.

Don't forget all the lovely pungent vaginal infections that could seem to be causing "total body" odor.

I think congenital causes (such as IEM) are unlikely to first present in a middle-aged woman.

achalasia causing mega-esophagus - those people have some rank odor

Sugary urine smell = diabetes.

Otherwise, ask her if she showers.

Please be more specific: I know that bacterial vaginosis has a distinct smell.
And I can see toxic shock syndrome(tampons) having the same.
The others are not really known for a diagnostic smell. Also what does (IEM) stand for??

schitzemselph syndrome - particularly prevelant in the pediatric, geriatric, substance abuse, and psychiatric populations
