Bonding occurs when there is overlap between orbitals. The more favorable the overlap, the lower the energy of the bond that is formed. (More negative = more stable) Antibonding occurs when there is no overlap. The energy is too high for overlap to occur between two orbitals. There are almost always bonds in between fully antibonding and fulling bonding.
