My program provides a small book fund for me over the next 4 years and I'm just wondering if there is anything I'm missing. I wish it was larger but I'm having to really prioritize what I should get. I'd like to get a netbook or something with the leftover funds, but I want to make sure that I'm not missing anything before I blow most of it.

Ophthalmoscope/Panoptics set $725
Adams and Victor $125
PDA apps - ~$100? (iphone)
Bag, Hammer, etc

Anything else that are requirements?

Thanks!

Well Jeff, Since you are in Iowa, I'd suggest some snow boots.
But seriously, I assume they only give you $1000 for the whole 4 years? in that case, definitely invest in a pan-optic because they dreamy. I'd also ask the upper levels about which books are the most useful. We have a list at my program and they are actually changing it up so that they purchase those books for us automagically.

I'd make sure you are allowed to spend the money on equipment or computers. During my residency, we weren't allowed to spend medical education funds on anything but books, which sucked.

Pan-optics are nice, but they are large and expensive. I'd make sure there aren't hard-wired ones around for communal use already. All our clinic rooms have pan-optics on the walls, and there are ophthalmoscopes on wheels on the floors, which made carrying around the handle + giant panoptic unnecessary.

Can you use the money for travel to conferences? Does your department pay for AAN membership, or can the membership fee come out of this fund? Can you defray the cost of a full medical license with it? Step 3 fees? The costs do add up pretty fast, so if it is really no-strings-attached, I'd stash some away for contingencies.
