Some statements in an other tread made me want to ask, What are your book/travel funds?

You can provide details below if you want (or PM, if you dont want t share publicly, I am try to get some info for my program)

I asked for details and didn't give any.

We get $400 per year for Books (with no upfront bonus books)
We get $1000 for non presenting meeting for 3rd and 4th years, but that is actually via Graduate medical Education.
The department pays for 1-2 meeting per year at $1000/meeting, but ONLY IF you are presenting.

Basicly we are pushing for more money.
I know at Case Western down the street they get $1500 per year combined book/travel fund, and the rules are very liberal (ie you can buy a PDA or computer with the book/travel fund)

Our fund is $1000 (per year), combined book and travel. Essentially used at the resident's discretion - no need to be presenting to use the money.

Travel fund is $1500 to be used over one's four year term. This can be used to travel if one is not presenting at a meeting. If one is presenting a poster/abstract at the meeting, supplemental funds can be requested and are usually approved.

Book fund is $500 per year. I've thought this is a little cheap with regard to books; do other programs provide more?

Well, if we are presenting, our travel is paid for. We are given one conference during the 4 years that we can attend without a reason and we will be reimbursed.

Books - I am not quite sure what the number is. I know when we start we are given a surg path text (Rosai or Sternberg), a CP text (McClatchey or Henry), the WHO heme book, a blood bank text. Then we get another $500-1000 per year for other purposes, but I can't remember the amount offhand. I think it is $500.

Travel is paid for if we're presenting, to the tune of $1,500. As at yaah's, we are given one conference during the 4 years that we can attend without a reason and we will be reimbursed.

The outgoing co-chiefs negotiated an increase in the book fund, which goes into effect this July.

* $1,000 for the first year (was $700/annually)
* $700 for the 2nd, third, and fourth years (was $400)
* $500 for the fifth year (was $200)

Free books so far: Transfusion Medicine by Dr. McCullough.

Great thread - definitely helpful when negotiating with the powers that be for more resident benefits 🙂

$1200 a year for all four years, to be used for educational purposes -- books, travel, PDA, etc.

Travel to conferences is separately paid for if you're presenting.

We also have a generous endowment fund created by one of our faculty that can be used for either research projects or travel to a conference.

It's all good.

I only want it so I can give info to the residents planning on trying to increase our funds... (so they can say, "well as an example State U gives..." etc)

Free dry cleaning? Awesome! We get our white coats laundered but I shudder to think at what would happen if I threw a shirt in the bin. The parking is also sweet. We get the perks with the workout facility, and we get a laptop computer. That parking would be nice though...I guess they make up for it by giving us lots of meal money.
