Does anyone have any suggestions as to what books are absolutely necessary for studying during surgery rotations? It's my first rotation third year and I'm just a bit freaked out by the impending onset 😱 any advice would be great...thanks!

Surgical Recall got me through my surgery rotation. I would look up whatever case or topic was at hand and it had the important information. Great for studying with others.

Lawrence, Fundamentals of Surgery is good for a more conventional textbook.

Lawrence--principles of gen surg and princ of surg subspecialties is a good text reference.

NMS Surgery is popular for studying for the shelf.

Surgical Recall is essential for daily pimp sessions.

An old anatomy atlas (netter?) may be useful in preparing for a case.

Not for 'studying' but for ward survival:
Since you're just starting out, you probably will find Maxwell cards essential for deciphering lab value abbreviations and medical note (op note, post-op, pre-op, progress notes) formats.

Consider Sanford Abx guide and a Pocket Pharmacopeia---I often have to leave my white coat hanging outside the OR suite (no white coats allowed in ORs) and don't want to risk getting my PDA stolen while I'm in on a case.

I know there are entire threads on what to carry in your pockets third year---you may want to check it out via an SDN search.

Cool! Thanks for the advice 🙂 Three more weeks til we start...yikes!

All great suggestions...

Pocket Maxwell's is great for any rotation.

For a text Lawrence is as good as any.

Surgical Recall is a must.

And for a pocket size handbook, can't beat Mount Reid, IMHO.
