I'm going to be a first year and alot of the second and third year students are selling their used books. I was wondering if it matters if a book is one edition behind? Take for example Costanzo Physiology second edition vs. the third edition and Lippincotts. Should I pass on these use books and just buy new ones?

Buy the used ones. You'll only use them as supplements for lecture -- to go over things the lecturer didn't cover very well or things you had trouble getting your head around.

I'm glad someone asked this question. Something I thought about before but slipped my mind.

How about the BRS and First Aid books? Ok to use 1 edition previous to the latest?

BRS, you can definitely use older editions. First Aid, I would get an older copy now if you can to supplement your studies and wait for a new edition to come out later. There are a lot of errors in FA and there usually is a list floating around with all of them come boards time.

Words of Wisdom:

ALWAYS buy the most updated version of USMLE Step 1 First Aid

First Aid is such an "amature" book. It's mainly written by med students. Errors are not uncommon at all. And for every edition, they make some significant changes in some sections. I know at least one of them: the sperm/oocyte genesis from 2007-2008.

You can always save the $35 from somewhere else.
