BOOKS U NEED FOR 3rd YEAR

I am a 4th yr, did well on rotations and here's my advice:

Psych--Appleton and Lange (A & L) Q and A book, First Aid, Pre-Test
ObGyne--First Aid (don't waste time w/ blueprints), A & L Q and A book
Medicine--Step-up to Medicine, Pre-Test Medicine
Neuro--Blueprints, Pre-Test
Surgery--Pre-Test, Blueprints, consider Case Files if time
ER--case files
Peds--Blueprints, A & L Q and A, Pre-Test
blueprints is too long for Ob, A & L Q/A for surgery has too many mistakes,
The new 2006 Blueprints seem like the best thing to get if you're thinking that series. For neuro, several ?'s were straight out of the book
ALSO: an excellent book for every rotation is Kaplan CK book, and Blueprints Step 2 Q and A (available for most specialties--this can get pricey though

What about a primary care rotation - just study medicine but focus on ambulatory stuff? 😕 I guess there's no shelf really in PC so I guess it differs from school to school.

I'm doing my Family med rotation right now, and it's supposed to be the hardest shelf exam - mix of medicine, OB, and peds. I'm also kinda confused on what to study - done with half of the rotation and kinda getting worried. Suggestions anyone?

And a general question - how can you tell if you are doing well on a rotation? What do you do to get a good grade? This is my first rotation, and I don't know if I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing.....

I tried using pretest for surgery - it is riddled with mistakes.

You have to use MKSAP for internal medicine - much better then pretest.

Case files for OB-GYN is a must also - you can read it in a weekend.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you about Blueprints for Ob/gyn. I thought it was very good, and one of the shortest ones (not sure why you thought it was too long, the FA was longer if I remember correctly), you can read the whole thing in a couple days. All I used for ob/gyn was blueprints and kaplan qbook ?'s and it was my highest shelf score of 3rd year. Just another opinion.

No, you're right - the site was taken over by the AAFP and you'll now have to be a paying member to access those questions. DAMN!

sounds strange i know but doing MKSAP would be good for the fam med shelf since most of it was inpatient medicine
