Well, this is more of a "general, intro" book, but our school's suggested text for the 3rd year clerkship was "Psychiatry" by Cutler & Marcus from the Sauders Text & Review Series. I actually liked the book a lot, despite the fact it was a "review" book. (It was more comprehensive and less "abbreviated" than many of the "clerkship review books" out there...)

It definitely seemed to have a more clinical "vibe" vs. the
Andreason & Black text they had us use during years 1-2.
It sounds like you're looking for something more than a review text, however.
I think the book most residents use is the Kaplan & Saddock book. (Any residents care to weigh in on this?)
(I know there's a Kaplan & Saddock "Synopsis" [1 volume] and also a longer, 2-volume "book", I could only find a link for the
Synopsis version...)
I'm currently reading the
APPI Textbook of Psychopharmacology, which was recommended to me in
this thread. (It was way too expensive for my budget but luckily I found a copy at the library.) I'm really liking this text a lot. (Maybe will ask for my own copy for Christmas...)
🙄 However, I think this text would be way overkill for 3rd year clerkship. (But you said you wanted to read up in preparation for electives & away rotations...)
