Hey guys, I'm currently a third year that has already decided on psych. I'm looking for a book that would prepare me for electives and away rotations. Not looking for anything focused on a particular sub specialty, like C/L, just a general psych text. I checked out the sticky on books/articles, but it's kind of all over the place and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, this is more of a "general, intro" book, but our school's suggested text for the 3rd year clerkship was "Psychiatry" by Cutler & Marcus from the Sauders Text & Review Series. I actually liked the book a lot, despite the fact it was a "review" book. (It was more comprehensive and less "abbreviated" than many of the "clerkship review books" out there...)

It definitely seemed to have a more clinical "vibe" vs. the Andreason & Black text they had us use during years 1-2.

It sounds like you're looking for something more than a review text, however.
I think the book most residents use is the Kaplan & Saddock book. (Any residents care to weigh in on this?)
(I know there's a Kaplan & Saddock "Synopsis" [1 volume] and also a longer, 2-volume "book", I could only find a link for the Synopsis version...)

I'm currently reading the APPI Textbook of Psychopharmacology, which was recommended to me in this thread. (It was way too expensive for my budget but luckily I found a copy at the library.) I'm really liking this text a lot. (Maybe will ask for my own copy for Christmas...) 🙄 However, I think this text would be way overkill for 3rd year clerkship. (But you said you wanted to read up in preparation for electives & away rotations...)

I like the Kaplan & Sadock 'synopsis' (incredibly long synopsis though lol).

IMO it's probably the shortest a truly comprehensive book on psychiatry can be.

As far as study guides for clerkships go, I wasn't happy with blueprints, but I wanted to blow the SHELF out of the water. I used NMS and loved it. NMS (the new versions on bigger paper with the white borders and colored insets) have never let me down, and IMO it could be a somewhat useful reference even into residency.

That said, I haven't looked at any books that are similar in size or scope to 'synopsis of psychiatry'

Thanks for the replies! I suppose the Kaplan and Saddock synopsis seems like the best choice!
I finished the clerkship a while back. I think the books for shelf prep are good for just shelf prep. I'm going to want something more in depth for my aways and electives.
