my score cards read 265 and 263 on usmle step 1 and 2. i am a international medical graduate and i just want to know if iam competetive for a emergency medicine residency if i can get a observership position and notch up a few LORS

Although you didn't quite get the magical "two hundred and 69" on the USMLE, I think you should be fine getting some interviews. Go on some rotations, get some LORs, apply to LOTS of places, and see where the Fates put you.

wow! If 265 and 263 dont increase the chance for an IMG to get to EM, What will be my chance? I am also an IMG, 247 and 255, no clinical experience in US! I am serious; how much chance do I have? Which places are better to apply?

I would say that clinical experiencein the US is more or less required.

Depends on other factors. Having clinical experience in the states definitely helps. The other big issue is whether or not you are a US citizen or if you require a visa.

Take a look around. There are some programs that are notoriously foreign friendly. There are actually some programs that will probably have a preference to Foreign-born, Foreign-trained applicants than US born, Foreign trained applicants as there is the belief that we went abroad because we were not good students.

The scores will help you get the interviews; however, once you get the interview, your personality, and how you "gel" with the program will take over and decide whether you will match or not.

260s are way too low for EM. Even the USMGs need at least 270.

I am currently ranked number 1 in my class at Johns Hopkins. I received a 290 on step 1 and a 310 on step 2. I invented the ET tube back in elementary school when I had a few spare hours to kill.

Do you think I have a chance of getting an EM residency or should I give up?

he was being serious. what he meant by "be nice" was that it is rude to acknowledge the 270 cutoff and crush people's hopes and dreams. kidding, only kidding. perhaps a better question than "why cant anyone be serious" is "why do so many physicians undergo an elective complete humorectomy?"




huge board scores dont hurt, but good lor's and your personality are definitely big factors.

You probably need to look elsewhere with regard to specialty training.....EM programs aren't going to give you a look unless you have 2+ patents.

I am so sorry to say that, but someone should be a little stupid to peruse all of my posts which seem "rubbish" to him/her!!!😀 . If you have followed them for fun, then dont call them "rubbish". Instead, be thankful for the fun moments that I created for you!

You know... these days, it is not easy to find somebody, even between the physicians and even in this site, who tries to understand others and wishes to help them out of confusion. The OP would have deserved your sarcasm if he was a US student. He is not, and it is entirely reasonable for him to worry; I'm sure hundreds of IMGs with impossibly good scores get turned down every year, simply for being IMGs.

thank you for the replies.since i made the mistake of not doing a rotation i now have to do externships.
if i had done a rotation, i would have tried to make a good impression.now as a observer will i have a good chance of doing that , because from what i heard an observer will just observe and answer questions or thats what i am told
so will the attendings be keen enough to write me a LOR?
