Hi All,

I'm an M2 now, I just got my class rank and am bottom 5% at a DO school. I'm really trying to figure out how my future looks. I've wanted to do Neuro for years and looked into it a lot but don't have any research.

Here is some interesting info:

We took a test on logical reasoning at the beginning of school. I scored in the top 1% of my med school class. I've gotten perfect or near perfect on every logic or math test I've ever taken.
I studied 60-80 hours a week through M1 year, but don't have any noticeable test anxiety. I really couldn't have studied any harder.
I wasn't a science major. I did the bare minimum prereqs.
I had an MCAT that would have gotten me above the average at most MD schools, but barely a 3.0 GPA.
I should do better on boards than my class rank would predict but I can't imagine crushing them.
I think I have ADHD and have been diagnosed by a few people, I take meds just about daily but don't really like being on them. I wouldn't really want to be on them post medical school or really post residency.
All my pt contact and everything has been great, people generally seem to like me and I feel good at that part. I've been good at diagnosis or the more reasoning type stuff in general.

So I guess

A. What the heck is going on here?
B. How does Neurology look for me?
C. How does completing a residency period and becoming a functional doctor look?

Plz don't quote this incase I want to delete it later.

You studied eleven and a half hours a day? I think that speaks higher volume than your grades. You're passing right?

You should question your study technique if you work that hard and don't get results. We're in the same class, most likely. Either PM me (I'm nice), open up to a friend who's doing well, or talk to a professor.

edit: do you go to class? If not, you need to start going and taking notes, even if you think "I'm not one of those lecture-types blah blah"

Neuro is pretty open. If you get around average on boards, you should be just fine. Unless you are trying to get to CA for residency or only apply to high tier programs it really shouldn't be that bad if you can manage average on your boards.

According to the program director survey, something like >80% of ACGME PDs interview and rank DOs. If you aren't planning to take the USMLE, maybe consider it if you think you can get around average on it. If you don't do step 1, it might be worth it to at least do step 2.

As far as the whole getting off meds thing, if I were you, I'd stay in close contact with your doc, and maybe they can work something out with you to take you off the meds.

Brownie, sounds like you haven't mastered time mgt yet. Either that, or there's some test-taking anxiety issues going on.

Does your school have a learning or education specialist? If so, seek them out for help with your learning styles. I fear that you have't found the right strategy yet.

A few tips: if you don't go to your professors for help, do so. They're there for you.
Study with your friends, not alone.
Go to classes.
Focus on what you don't know, rather than what you do.
Start with the biggest concepts and work your way down into the weeds.
Learn a bug a day and a drug a day.
Do NOT merely memorize...apply!

Go to the nearest bar, grab a beer and stop worrying. You will ignore this advice but so did I when I was in your shoes.

Unless you failed multiple courses, how is that even possible?
Over 5% of our class are students who were ahead of us and are now repeating the year, not to mention those who had to remediate one or two courses from the previous term.

Also, does your school just tell you your rank, or do you have to ask? I'm kind of afraid to know haha
