ive been wondering about this lately, so i figured, "why not asks everyone at SDN..."

every year, at every medical school, there is one student who is ranked at the bottom of the class. what happens to these students? does their rank affect them when applying to residency programs???

im not planning to be the bottom of my class by any means, but the notion has been crossing my mind lately.

so what do you guys think about this???

haha, yes, your right. but i cant imagine that graduating last in your class would not have any bearing on your application to residency programs...
just a thought...

Depends on how they score on the boards and who they know. Connections can always help and the low passing student who somehow pulls a 260 out of his a$$ on step 1 can do quite well too. But assuming the person is a bottom dweller from beginning to end from an allo school, he often ends up doing primary care or another non-competitive residency at a less prestigious place in a less prestigious part of the country. Which is fine for many -- their patients will never know where they ranked in the class, nor care, nor ask. FWIW half of all the doctors out there were in the bottom half of their class.

You know about half of med schools don't rank students anymore right? You still get grades and the schools send out a comparison to residencies to show how you did in relation to other students in each of your classes. Still no one is last at most schools anymore.

I'm not sure that's even true. The dude who is last in his class is probably more realistic about his match choices than the guy who is, say, 20 up from the bottom.

Sometimes. But there are always folks for whom it never clicks, who keep spinning their wheels at full speed and never get any traction. For them, the first two years are no fun at all.

That doesn't mean he's not most likely to be disbarred. 😉

As for the bottom of the class thing, do they release your exact class ranking in your residency letters? I'm just curious if anybody would find out that you're dead last. At my school, they only tell us our quartiles, so you might not know if you're dead last.

One thing to note is that the person who is last is likely a person who had to remediate some classes. That might be a bigger red mark than being last in your class.
