I've read a few posts about the BR having a new physics book. Well it's out and it's excellent. I've only been through the translational motion chapter so far, and it shows the shortcuts they teach in class.

Here's the trick if you can do it. I went into the UCLA center today to buy the books and see if they have a mini course (I'm too broke to take the regular class 🙂 ). I was pleasantly surprised to learn that you can buy the same books that the UCLA class is using. If you happen to be in southern California and plan to buy the books, do it in person and save the crazy shipping costs.

is the physics books copyrighted for 2009? the ochem and gen chem ones i got have 2010 copyrights but the physics is 2009. However they're the same ones the guy who took the class this summer had. i bought the bio books from him but decided to buy the rest from TBR instead.
i haven't looked through the new books but i'm curious to know if the blue book with the black spine is the newest edition. i think the previous edition didn't have a black spine.
just wondering

Mine had a spiral binding on it. They are all 2010 copyright, except verbal reasoning is 2009 and writing is 2009.

I've done the second chapter of physics now and I have to say I really like the new arrangement of the passages. It's really well thought out. We should start a thread with scoring feedback, because I'm doing better this time and don't want a false sense of security.

So have you gone through the entire older physics book including doing all the problems and reading all the chapters before obtaining this one?

dang it! The physics one i got had the black binding and the ochem and gen chem ones i got are 2010 copyright but they have a more cream colored binding, nothing spiral. I guess they use whatever's available for the binding. I'm surprised they'll redo the physics again if the copyright is 2009. looking at the trends(previous copyrights), it looks like they seem to edit it at least every 2 or 3years. I'd love a spiral binding though. oh well...😳

Seriously! I ordered my books about a week and a half ago and I got the 2009 ones! Makes me wonder if they gave me the 2009 edition just to get rid and make room for the 2010. 😡

same thing i'm thinking.

I don't think there is any difference. If they did that you are at no disadvantage.

Physics has been pretty much the same for the last few decades. Although prep materials may improve slightly, you will see this:

Excellent preparer with 2009 books: High score

Mediocre preparer with 2009 books: mediocre score

Excellent preparer with 2010 books: High score

Mediocre preparer with 2010 books: mediocre score

The difference isn't the prep material.

I think as you are buying prep material you think it is super important, then later you realize that it is the student.

A level prep: TPR HL science workbook / BR passages / AAMC FL / BR FL

Year? Who cares.

I'm figuring that I got lucky and bought books that aren't ready for distribution yet. They are definitely the ones for their next class starting in January. I took the class years ago and we never had binding like this, so I think it's experimental. I doubt they could ship books with that sort of binding. I'll bet the books they ship are bound in a way to make packing easier.

Hey. Where exactly is the UCLA Center (or which one)? I am thinking of dropping by next quarter to get me a copy.

so you used all the Berkeley material a few years ago, What happened then with the MCAT and everything (application/prep)?

why are you buying new materials if your other ones are only a few years old?

I'm a case study in what not to do. I took the MCAT in April 2004 (after taking a PR prep class and studying EK materials). I thought I was ready when I went in, but I got a 26. I was especially bummed at my verbal, because I had done EK and was getting 10s. My actual MCAT was different than what I had expected and studied for.

I retook the test in August 2004, this time reluctantly dropping cash on another prep course. That is the only smart thing I did. The BR class was perfect for my style and I ended up getting a 33. But like a complete idiot, I didn't apply until I got my scores back in October. The truth of the matter is that I was scared I wouldn't do as well as I wanted on the MCAT and I didn't want to waste money on my application.

By the time I applied, I was closed out and only got a couple interviews, all really late. I decided to work after graduation and was going to apply once I had enough money. To make a long story short, my company was a casualty of the economy and I've been farting around at the local CC and working part time the last year. I'm finally ready to go hardcore again, but I just flat out can't afford the BR course. The next best thing is getting the books. I was surprised, but Todd (the owner and main teacher, writer, etc.) remembered me and let me have the books for the upcoming class and not have to have them shipped.

So now I'm back grinding out multiple choice questions until 1 in the morning and then dreaming about free fall and titration curves.

They have a classroom and office a couple doors down from Whole Foods on Gayley. Call ahead of time to make sure Todd is there, because I think he's the only one who handles books. The first time I stopped by, the teacher that was there couldn't sell me the books. Also, Todd opens his office hours up to people who buy the books, so I'm going to be all over that.

Good luck, work hard. 👍

Thanks! I don't think the hard work will be a problem because I find studying to be pretty fun. It's figuring out how to pay rent and save money to apply.

Amen to that! I started saving up my during my sophomore year of college. I'm now a 5th-year senior and I just barely have enough to apply!
