When is it appropriate to begin wearing these? I'm assuming people don't just switch randomly one day in their mid-60s.

I'm debating making the switch to bowties once I'm settled in a residency spot (God willing). Maybe earlier if I end up matching somewhere in the south.

I had a professor in his 40s that always wore a bowtie.

And an ID attending in his early 30s that does as well - for an infection control statement.

I totally think you should do it!

One of my professors wears suspenders. He jokes (I think) that he has to special order them because they are so rare. I have a classmate who wore a bow tie to the white coat ceremony, which I thought was pretty awesome. Not all of my classmates agreed.

Very appropriate at childrens hospital at anytime.

Clothing is all in the attitude. If you think you can rock a bow tie and suspenders, by all means do so. There is no time better than now.

In the words of the Governator...

"DO IT NOW!!!"

Wearing a bow tie will also increase your effectiveness at counseling by 5%.

I think bowties are both appropriate and a good idea at any age. Less surface area that regular ties, so less space for bacteria from the patients in pharmacies and hospitals to colonize. Regular ties are pretty much giant rags of germs and bacteria that go from patient to patient (many already have compromised immune systems). And most health professionals probably don't wash all of their ties on a weekly basis. so...yeah.. the bowtie sounds like a good idea.

be careful you're not too skinny to wear suspenders.

I cant because i feel like i'm too skinny .. but bowties still work..

suspenders remind of of two things.. psychiatrists/psychologists and journalists

One time at a hospital, my friend took off his tie when he went into the IV room since he had to put a gown on. The school's practice experience director showed up and chewed him out for taking off the tie. o_0

My preceptor wants me to wear scrubs, but I'm afraid of the school's director showing up.

Bowties are ok but I think you def need the personality (mega nerd and/or hella goofy) to go along with it bc everyone's gonna call you out on it. And since you're already wearing a bowtie with presumably bold patterns, I guess suspenders/braces are ok; go big or go home.

although i wore one at church on Easter sunday...

I only usually see ballers or people who have "made it" wear bow ties, haha

if you got the looks and the right attitude, not everyone can pull it off.
