Yes and no. You only hear about the worst cases, but it is a pervasive problem. I wouldn't want my loved ones taking that many blows to the head.

Probably shoudn't box if you are an ApoE 4 carrier--associated with higher rates
of dementia pugilistica.

I remember hearing about a study that even soccer players have brain damage from all the headers. I imagine boxing would be much worse..

I guess part of the problem stems from the fact that the term 'brain damage' is so vague.
