Can anyone explain to me how example 1.1b was answered? I don't understand how 10^1 was picked as the order magnitude...

It might be easier to see if you draw the dimensional analysis out.

0.02906 km/s x (3600 s/hr) x (1/1.609 miles/km)

This becomes:

(2.906 x 10^-2) x (3.6 x 10^3) x (1/1.609) miles/hr

= (2.906 x 3.6)/1.609 x (10^-2 x 10^3)

= (2.906 x 3.6)/1.609 x 10^1
