What's the difference between Br2/CCl4 and Cl2/CCl4?

I've seen in several examples that Br2/CCl4 forms Syn addition whereas Cl2/CCl4 forms a trans addition! Why is that?

yea I am 100% sure that Br2 adds trans but I know there is always exception among halogens. I don't have a reason but I am pretty sure that for some reason Cl2 doesn't follow the same mechanism as Br2, hence Cl2 adds syn.

I don't think that's true; addition of halogen to alkenes are anti addition( Cl2 and Br2) due to their cyclic halonium ion mechanism. Even in our organic chemistry lesson book (4th edition), page 228, chapter 5 says that..Here is also a link that says halogen addition are always anti..

But in reactions with alkanes(radicals), Cl2 is more reactive than Br2, therefore a chlorine radical makes primary, secondary and tertiary radicals with almost equal ease but a bromine radicals prefer tertiary radicals.

Well I don't remember where else I've seen this right now but actually destroyer OCHM # 71 shows a syn addition for Br2/CCl4 as well but if you go to the roadmap #3 and #5 it shows a trans addition of Cl/CCl4...So yeah I thought they both should be trans or at least Br2/CCl4 be trans, but I'm confused now!

Because in #71, dr romano didn't really focus on stereochemistry of the molecule ( like drawing the actual perspective formula or fisher projections) but in road map #3 and 5 he does.

By the way let's open a new thread for HarryG and end the war here😛..
