WSU-Oakwood program announces new Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Brain Injury Medicine (BIM) Fellowship accredited by the ACGME, and the only accredited BIM Fellowship in the State of Michigan, is designed to provide basic and advanced knowledge and experience in the field of traumatic brain injury.
The program will familiarize the fellow with all aspects of the clinical practice, treatment, and rehabilitation strategies, including professional clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation settings.
The program also includes a research component that emphasizes scholarship and original contributions to the study of traumatic brain injury while reinforcing publication and presentation skills, as well as providing experience in the administrative aspects of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
This fellowship is 12 months in duration, commencing in July of each academic year. Applications may be submitted in September of each year.
The Traumatic Brain Injury Fellowship will focus on the prevention of brain injury and the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals with acquired brain injury. Patients often require intervention from a multidisciplinary treatment team, speech language pathology, psychotherapists, neuropsychologists, recreation therapy, home care and case manager support, in addition to other physicians for related or chronic injuries.
Fellows receive BIM clinical training and have protected time for academic work including a wide range of options for involvement in teaching and clinical research.
Selection Criteria
Applicants for the Brain Injury Fellowship must meet the following criteria:
- Be in their last year of residency or completed their residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
- Successful completion of USMLE or COMLEX.
- US citizenship or permanent legal resident.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible candidates will have successfully completed a Residency, and be Board Eligible or Board Certified, in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
* Preference will be given to Physiatrists
The intention to pursue an academic career is strongly desired, but not required.
Application Process
Applicants for the BIM Fellowship will be expected to submit a letter of interest, C.V. and three professional letters of references to the BIM Fellowship Program Director, Jay M. Meythaler, M.D., J.D.

This premier Fellowship boasts of three board certified faculty members in Brain Injury Medicine: Dr. Deshpande, Dr. Mukhi and Dr. Meythaler.
1. Residents who are interested in applying to the WSU SOM PM & R-Oakwood Brain Injury Fellowship must apply beginning September 1.
Our fellowship accepts one fellow position each year. Candidates will be contacted by the Program Coordinator to arrange for a personal interview with faculty leadership, staff and chief residents.

- 3 Letter of recommendation (LORs), (including 1 from PM&R faculty)

- Curriculum Vitae
- ECGMG Certificate (if foreign graduate)-all foreign medical graduates must have completed one year of training, practicing as a physician in the USA
- Applicants must pass a background and reference check as a condition of employment per institution policy, and must adhere to the Oakwood non-nicotine hiring policy.
Proof of current VISA status is required per our institution. If currently applying for exchange visitor visa (J-1) they must also provide a CV and ministry of health letter from home government per WSU SOM policy.
3. Candidates for our Brain Injury Fellowship must have strong interpersonal skills, academic excellence, clinical competence and the highest professional and ethical standards. Successful candidates possess a strong work ethic and a commitment to research and leadership training.
