Step I Brain mets

FA, BRS, and Im pretty sure robbins all state that incidence of Brain mets ~= incidence of primary brain CA.

Yet QBank is frontin' some "~70% of adult supratentorial Brain CA = metatstatic" this morning.

Any thoughts?

According to Goljan in our path class:

1. Mets are the most common "Overall" tumor in the brain.

2. Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common "Primary" tumor in the brain in adults.

3. Cystic cerebellar astrocytoma is the most common "Primary" tumor in the brain in children.

4. Meningioma is the most common "Benign" tumor in the brain.

So now who do I beleive? Goljan or Robbins, Cotran, Kumar, and Collins (Robbins authors)

I would go with mets as being the most common overall brain tumor. A neurosurgeon who lectured in our Clinical Problem Solving class said the same thing.

If the question asks which tumor is the most common, I will pick mets every time.

If the question asks which "Primary" tumor is the most common, I will pick Glioblastoma for adults and CCA for children.


As far as who to believe, I don't know. 😕

I'm going with the home cooking on this one.

Just to add, on P. 410 of BRS Pathology, it states that metastatic brain tumors are more common than primary brain tumors.
