Hey guys,

How smart do you REALLY have to be to get accepted to and survive medical school? I wouldn't consider myself a genius, but in the same breath I wouldn't say I'm intellectually challenged.

It's actually not as much about being smart as it is about being ridiculously good looking. 😀

Hahaha. Well, if that's the case, I won't be having any problems. 😉

Actually, you have to be ******ed to even consider applying.

Just kidding. The first rule of med school is that, once you're in, you have to bitch about it and make it out to be 10x worse than it actually is.

No you don't have to be ridiculously intelligent. Just work hard.

This always holds true except if you encounter new recruits on interview tours...then ya'll seem like the happiest bunch of kids on this planet. 😀

Hard work is what makes or breaks you.

You'll find out soon that if you work hard, you do well. If you don't work hard, you don't do well.

The real key is focused studying vs. lazy studying. I can sit here all day staring at a book and not learn a thing... OR I can be extremely focused and get a ton done in an hour.

Hard work mostly, but obviously, intelligence and test-taking ability do play somewhat of role too. Believe it or not some people do fail out of med school (~ 2 to 5%).

Actually, you have to be REALLY, REALLY ridiculously good looking. And you have to be able to read good.

You have to be this smart.

(*holds hands out at the appropriate distance to indicate how smart one must be*)

it is a total myth that you have to be smart to well in med school.

I am a complete idiot.

dilligence and hard work. I have a friend who's getting Cs. he came from a well known smartypants college with a degree in engineering or something.

I think the average med student is pretty bright, but no genius.

I also think that intelligence comes in different forms and medical students on average excell in being able to memorize stuff, but arent remarkable in all areas. This is just a generalization though and doesnt apply to everyone.

I think medium intelligence is all that you need. Nothing is particularly difficult about medicine, it's just the shear volume. As long as you have the dedication to study for 5-15 hours a day and go weeks on end without a complete day off, you should be able to make it.

this thread is really disappointing

will I don't know how hard the medical schools in the world wide , but believe me in Libya the medical school is very hard ( extra-hard ) .

apples to oranges

I feel that med school is difficult for those in places where the education leading up to it is lacking. I'm not sure how the system works in libya, but many countries take students right out of high school and start them in medical school (albeit a 6 year program or some thing like that)

If you have the foundation set before you head in (and by this I mean knowing HOW to learn) all you need is a decent work ethic and you'll do fine.

Smart is kind of a general term. Obviously everyone in our class is bright, and I'm sure if we all took IQ tests on average most people would probably at least be average to above average (with some geniuses in the mix). We have a pretty big variety in our class. Some people I know are ridiculous when it comes to learning and sponge it all up with one sitting...others (myself included) require a good bit of studying just to pass. You don't have to be a genius if you can put in the work.

IQ >130

In all seriousness, I know about 12 people from my class who have gotten into med school so far. Three or four are pretty brilliant and could've gotten As without much effort (but worked hard and regularly blew the curves), 6 or 7 are fairly smart, busted their *sses, and squeaked by with a healthy mix of As and Bs in the pre-med courses. And then one or two wouldn't have survived a high school calculus course and have such little common sense that, as of now, I would never refer a patient to them no matter where they go to school. But that's just my cynical self.

I think admissions committees are more concerned about who can become a good doctor, not how smart someone is.

As far as "surviving", I don't have much experience in that besides meeting plenty of doctors that would flounder in Jeopardy or things like that. I would guess (and it seems like) hard work trumps natural intelligence.

-This is too cute......
