One of our hospitals apparently received a bad batch of clamp connectors with the Braun epidural catheters. We have had several disconnections in the past week by several different anesthesiologists with the catheters end found completely free from the clamped catheter connector. Anyone the having same issues?

We have Braun, and the company sent us a notice which I have attached. If you look at page 13, it shows how to tape the yellow epidural sticker over the connector to help prevent the disconnect. I sent this to my partners; I'm not sure if they are all doing this, but I haven't heard of any issues thus far.

I thought it was just me imaging things.

We continue to have problems of disconnects, despite taping our alligator clamp connectors. What other brands do people like? We currently have samples of BD trays, and there seem to be two types of connectors: a screw-together model and a disc that twists into place. Any tips?

I don’t know if it’s a bad batch, we have been dealing with this for years now. Switching to BD solved it, I don’t really like the kits though.

I tend to tape with a bit of catheter folded onto the connector so if there is a pull then it won't have direct pressure and immediately pull out, seems to work okay. Even with a statlock they seem to have disconnects, sometimes just better to give the line more slack

Completely forgot about this thread and had a catheter disconnect a couple weeks ago. Super annoying

Use supplied tape or Tegaderm to reinforce connection. I then loop slack and put 2 horizontal pieces of tape on loop in a way that no tension is ever on connection. I joke that I am making the patient a "captain" of their labor. 😉

I secure the connector with a small teasers if it is going to be in the pt for more than a few hours. Much like Drwine described.

Braun > Arrow any day. Arrow touhy is blunt af, feels like you're shoving a hammer through them. Braun gives a more tactile feel, can actually feel the ligament crunching. also the alligator clip is better than the blue and yellow slide clip. I've had to open other kits just to get another clip from the arrow because it malfunctions and you cant push through. Also the braun kit comes with a sterile tegaderm inside (can't beat that).

What kit are you using? Ours doesn't come with a tegaderm. We have the perifix fx continuous anesthesia epidural tray.

If you go through enough of them, you can request custom trays with whatever you want inside. In general, I find the Braun trays to be horribly laid out.
