Hey all, I was just wondering what the bread and butter operation in neurosurgery is. Im sure that most of them is spine work because nobody can be expected to perform intracranial surgeries on the regular. Also i am curious as to how long these procedures take on average. I know that certain surgeries can last up to 22 hours and thats all nobody every talks about but how long are the more common surgeries.

thanks in advance.

anybody? Surely somebody knows.

A fully trained Neurosurgeon can expect roughly 3/4 of his/her cases to be spinal in nature. However, a student still in their fellowship years should expect that figure to be far more lop-sided, considering senior students have priority while being assigned cases and naturally choose the more interesting patients to work on, which are often intracranial. Also, Pediactric Neurosurgeons generally have a higher percentages of intracranial cases considering the majority of spine-related problems coinside with age.

Only on rare and complicated cases will operations last longer than 12 hours. Surgery, like most things in the real world, is rarely done alone, so the more difficult procedures often employ a team of surgeons. The average (mean) operation lasts about 4.5 hours but there is a great deal of variation.

thanks, that was exactly what i was looking for.
