the scores:

PAT: 22 (96.2)
QR: 15 (39.0)...WTF!!!
RC: 23 (94.5)... pianoed and LOVED it
BIO: 27 (99.7)
CHEM: 23 (95.0)
OCHEM: 24 (95.2)
TS: 24 (99.3)
AA: 22 (96.4)

First of all, let me thank all the posters before me whom i've incorporated their advice. Now the break down...

BIO: Very straight forward, i guess it was "random" in a sense that biology is a HUGE field and there are millions of different questions they could ask, but all in all it was very fair. My advice for this section is DON'T skimp out on the plant chapters. I used Cliffs, Campbells, kaplan BB and schaums (i listed them in the order of usefullness). I would recommend going through Campbells after you know all of cliffs to fill in the holes and to get a complete picture on topics.

CHEM: Again, very much straight forward. I probably had 40% calculations and 60% conceptual. For this section, I used: ACS, Kaplan, Examcrackers, and FREE websites (more on this later).

OCHEM: Honestly, I thought I aced this section going through it, but it was still very straight forward (lol i use this phrase alot). Um...my advice for this section is DO NOT skimp out on the kaplan BB experimental section as it may serve you well. Know your nmr, IR, etc. For this section I used ACS, Kaplan, Examcrackers, high yield organic chemistry.

QR: Oh My F****ing god this was hard (at least for me). I mean, i'm no slump in math but according to my scores i just may be. I can honestly say that nothing I practiced was similar to the actual test, but frankly you guys dont want my advice on this section so i wont give it lol.

RC: I got the dreaded piano passage, but honestly it wasnt that bad...it was actually kind of intersting. I think people make a bigger deal out of this than they have to b/c all of the information is in the passage, even though it may not be word for word out of the passage. By no means am i a super reader (i only read what i have to for school) but i still thought this section was manageable. I read the entire passage (yes the entire passage) before i even looked at the questions. I've tried search and destroy, but i usually ended up forgetting the question mid way through reading. I honestly think reading the entire passage is better, especially for the tone questions.

PAT: I thought i did better on this section, but oh well. People recommend CDP for a reason as will I. It is the single best program to practice PAT. Everything was similar to CDP except on the hole punching, I saw some folds i have never seen in CDP. Also, there were a couple of keyholes I was totally unsure about.

Over all, i am pretty happy with my scores, minus the QR. Obviously you DONT need destroyer to do well in the sciences (though it may have helped my QR), but what you need is practice. Kaplan is great for chemistry and organic chemistry, but it lacks practice. This is where examcrackers, ACS, etc. were extrememly usefull. I also used topscore and thought it was a somewhat usefull tool for estimating your score. I scored higher in all the sciences than i did in topscore, reading was about the same, QR was NOT similar at all (i scored a 22, 19 and 24 on these tests) and i didnt bother doing the PAT (i substituted with CDP). my friend had downloaded examcrackers, ACS (organic), high yield chemistry, and campbells so these were free to me. The only items i paid for were kaplan, cliffs (i had this from highschool, good thing i saved this book!), schaums (not necessary at all), topscore, and CDP math and PAT.

My overall gpa is 3.89, science is 3.92 and have applied to NYU, Louisville, Buffalo (NY resident), columbia, maryland, penn, boston, temple, and case western. My applications have been mailed, but i have not sent in the fees to the schools yet. My question to you guys is should i bother sending in the fees to columbia and penn with my QR score?

feel free to ask me questions. Oh, by the way i will give away all my study stuff, but you have to come pick it up (zip code is 14530) so get a hold of me if you want it.

i realize i forgot to list the free websites, but i will add to this post later b/c i have a massive hangover right now and just want to sleep.

def send your app and fees to Columbia and UPenn.

Columbia esp LOVES high DAT (AA) I think you have a great chance of getting in there.

UPenn loves GPA a bit more then DAT but still yours is outstanding and your DAT overall should get you an interview.

You may get asked about your QR don't make excuses just explain that you mismanaged the clock and failed to prepare as well as the sciences. They don't like excuses they like it when you man up and explain why you didn't excel as well as the sciences. But I doubt they will really hold it against you.

You should def get interviews at those two schools.

Great scores man!! I agree with you that Kaplan lacks practice on gchem... I am gonna do a lot of examcrackers... do u think 2 weeks of examcrackers wud be enuf for gchem after detailed kaplan review... other than that I am pretty good with content.. Were kaplan subject tests any helpful...???

i didnt do any kaplan subject tests besides the ones for QR. but as for examcrackers, the questions are very good, just make sure you understand the reasoning/concepts behind the answers. i would go through each question (even the ones you got right) and read the explainations for each question and see if you got it right with the correct knowledge, or if you got it right by chance. but if you can, do more practice problems than just exam crackers, the more you do, the better off you'll be

i didnt use that one, but im sure it is still good, maybe even better since there are more questions in it. the examcrackers i used were the organic chemistry and general chemistry 7th edition (i also used the 101 reading passage one)

In regards to RC, you would definitely reading/skimming through the entire passage first before even looking at the questions?

Also what were some beneficial websites you would recommend for the chem section!

Thanks!

I read (not skimmed) the entire passage before i even looked at the first question and even finished with 8 mins to spare. everyone is going to be different and will be more efficient one way or another, but for me, this was the way to go. as for the websites:

1)http://www.chemmybear.com/groves/apchem.html
(This was probably the best general chemistry resource i have found, i did all the practice tests at the end of each chapter)

2)http://cwx.prenhall.com/petrucci/
(a prentice hall website and contains many different quizes on various topics in general chemistry)

3)http://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/co...1&__uuid=97abb590-ddb2-4bb8-bbd8-72b0d17e2625
(This is the ACS website that contains multiple chemistry olympiad tests from past years, i really didnt have time to go through many of these, but they were still very helpful)

4)http://www.sciencegeek.net/APchemistry/APtaters/directory.shtml
(this site is good for calculation problems, though he must round numbers different b/c some of the answers i got were a little off of the correct answer choice and i know i wasnt doing them wrong)

And here is a website for organic chemistry problems:

5)http://chemistry.boisestate.edu/people/richardbanks/organic/mc/mcquestions317.htm

all these sites are good supplemental material to give you extensive PRACTICE for the concepts you read about in a book

Nice job!! Gotta hate QR though >.>. Can you tell us how you approached studying for QR anyway?? (Just so we can learn from any mistakes/ compare to our own methods).

Thanks in advance and best of luck applying!! 👍:luck:

the funny thing is, i actually moved my test back 2 weeks in order to study math and RC. I guess it shows in RC but deff not the math section. What i did was go through kaplan BB and their QR tests. basically i knew the BB inside and out. I tried to do as many problems as possible (i went through 501 word problems, another book with word problems, and any i could find online, especially gre math prep sites). I also did Crack dat math and was scoring 20-21 on each test. you should definitely know the formulas for interst rate and distance (d=rt) and how to manipulate simple formulas like these for more complicated problems. looking back, i feel like i put in enough time for math, but i just wasnt studying the right stuff. that and i have never seen so many word problems on one QR test! My advice is to practice as many problems as possible, and get to the point where you read the question, and then immediatley know what formula to use and how you are going to solve it...but you have to take this advice with a grain of salt since my QR score is not so hot

Thanks cmills66,

With every breakdown that gets posted, I become more and more nervous about QR... I'm not a math person to begin with (math is why my sci gpa is lower than my bcp lol). I guess I'm going to have to bust my arse like crazy for QR.😱

it is possible that i just psyched myself out for this portion of the test and performed badly. stay cool as a cucumber and dont get flustered and you'll do fine

What kind of stuff should I study for in plant section. So far, I have covered the following areas in plants/botany. Am I missing something?

Photosynthesis/Respiration
Alternation of generation
Taxonomy
reproduction/genetics

I think you are in a good situation with the material you have studied. Its just some people make the mistake that they wont see any plant questions and BOOM, they get hit with a couple (even 2 missed questions can have a big difference on your bio score). I knew everything you have listed, but i also knew the plant section in cliffs ap bio, which included info on plant tissues, structure, hormones, etc. Though i thought i probably wouldnt see these types of questions, i wanted to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for help on ghem.. I got one more bio question. Shud I worry too much about fungi bio and its life cycle and stuff... Those names are hard to cram... thanks

obviously its unlikely that you would get 2 or more questions specifically on these topics, but if you are going for total biology domination, then yes...i would go over them 😉

thats wat i am aiming for... My brain is a about to become xerox of cliffs bio ... thanks .. when u said ACS for gchem.. is that a book published by ACS?

yes it is and here is the official title:

Preparing for Your ACS Examination in General Chemistry:
The Official Guide

Its basically a review book for people in college that have to take the ACS examination at the end of the year, instead of a regular final.
