I signed a contract with a preliminary surgery program a couple of days ago outside the match. I now have an offer from a preliminary medicine program that is much better suited to my needs (and by needs I do NOT mean work load, location, call schedule, or any other petty aspects of programs). If I choose to break my contract with the recently signed program, and join the more suitable residency, will I suffer negative consequences?

It will depend very heavily on the PD and the program. The only way out that I see, is to talk to the surgery PD and explain your situation, ask for his take on it. Be prepared to honor your contract, though.

my first question would be, why on earth would you sign a contract with one program in august when you knew there was a program out there that was better for you?? 👎 there's like, 6 months until rank lists are due ... anything could happen

How were you able to get a position outside the match? What did you do? When? Thanks!

To answer the question - anyone who is not an Allopathic senior in a US medical school can get a position outside the Match, between ERAS registration and the Match (aka pre-match). Anyone can get an open position outside the match once it's over, (post-match/scramble)

The pre-match will be eliminated, effective for the 2013 Match that opens for registration on September 1, 2012
