During my gynecological oncology rotation, I happened to hear an attending telling the gyn onc fellow that the department was hoping to start offering a 2 month elective in breast surgery. They also were discussing how gyn-oncologists really want to get into the "breast business" since cervical cancer is not as big of a problem as it used to be and will decrease more with the HPV vaccine in coming generations. benefits they say are: breast surgery is not extremely difficult, gyn-onc and ob-gyns are well aware of female physiology/anatomy, and gyn-oncs would also be able to manage their patients' chemotherapy as well.
