Soooo....I've taken this test err...2 times before. And I'm contemplating sneaking in some fine tipped dry erase markers to use instead of the fat suckers they give you. I believe they are the reason I can't do 20+ on RC because after outlining those passages I can't read anything!

Anyone done this highly illegal?? move on test day? Or...is it not worth it?

haha. i got the thin dry eraser markers. just make sure you check them before the test. you can't bring anything into the room. i tried bringing in my own earbuds to cancel out the noise, but they didn't let me and told me i could only use their's. don't do it. you don't want to find that you got a good score and then somehow they null it or void it. that would SUCK!

Not worth the risk... just check the markers at the desk, make sure they are good, before you go in to take the test.

can you not just bring in some and ask the people at the desk if you could use them? When i took the test, the girls that were working were very laid back. i'm sure if you asked nice they just might let you as long as they don't mess up the boards...but depends on who you ask i guess.

Not mine, she was terrible; I couldn't get her to smile at all. Although maybe it was from my appearance, I showed up having not shaved for a week or two and messed up, fresh out of bed, hair, lol. She seemed surprised when she gave me my score sheet; didn't expect much from how I looked, ha!

BTW, did you cheer in HI?

haha yea I definately don't think it would be worth comprimising my new Awesome 🙂 score this time...but I think I will just bring fine tipped ones and ask. I guess asking never hurt. But do you guys know what I mean? After outlining 15 paragraphs at lightening speed then trying to go back and quickly decipher what you wrote with fat markers is near impossible!

oh well :0)

I was allowed to take in my own ear plugs which I think really helped. I agree with everyone about the extra fat magnum tipped pens they give out ... im definitely going to ask and try to take my own when I retake. Maybe the no shave, no shower, i just woke up in a trash can look is a strategy ill also try and utilize after looking at your scores.

Hmmm..I wonder if anyone can exempt the marker by filing a " I get headaches from the smell" complaint prior to the test....

HI = hawaii?? no, never been there. i did get offered scholarships for both UH and HPU after sending my video in, but turned them down (dumb dont ya think)...but anyway, i went to school in NC and GA (cheered at both)

I was very concerned about this before I took my DAT as well. I think it depends on who you have there proctoring the exam. I was thinking about taking my own so I called the prometric place like 3 days before I took it to ask if that was allowed and was told absolutely not and have to use their markers, but when i got there i could request to have the fine tip ones. i also exchanged markers during my break so that i had a nice fresh fine tip for the RC where i wrote notes down. if i were you i would call and see what they say. good luck!

Yeah, I was definitely freaking a bit about the markers, even went so far as to buy a pack. Thought better of it, though, and left them in my car. I guess I could have asked, but the somewhat fat dry erase markers they give worked well enough. I guess if everyone has the same crappy markers it's fair, right?

Thats good to know. Im definitely going to ask for the fine tips, I cannot fathom why anyone would want to use those huge things.

Oh, I saw that 808 in your name.

Oahu is a blast to live on, you definitely should have checked out the programs at least. My girlfriend cheered for HPU on a full ride for a couple years.

good call about the area code...never thought about that. i'm from NC and when i first moved there i lived in area code 808 (since has been changed to 704)

Hi people,

could anybody explain to me the marker and how it could be used in th RC or any other section? I have no idea what every one is talking about. it seems that it might help to add this to any other strategies you can offer.

thankls

Hi Every Body, Anyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Body!!!! Would You Be Kind Enough To Help Me Out And Explain To Me How The Markers Are Used For The Rc Part On The Dat? I Feel That This Will Be My Week Point And I Need All The Help That I Can Get.

Please Respond Thanks Again.

What ever happened to the good ol' days where NORMAL paper and a NORMAL sharpened no. 2 pencil did the job?

IMO, tree-hugging should be done in classes, if anything, not on a standardized test.

I guess that non of you KNOWLEDGABLE pre-dents would like to help me out and answer my question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when you take the test you are only allowed to use their markers and dry erase boards for note taking, math problems, etc...

they are referring to the key-word-passage-outlining-method for RC. when you read the passage you make notes (key word(s)) on your little yellow dry erase boards on what each paragraph is about, that way when you get to the questions you can simply go to the paragraph that has the answer you're looking for. if i were you, i would practice that before you decide to test the waters the day of the test.

I also would guess that you cannot bring your own markers in. I wanted to bring a pencil sharpener in with me because I cannot stand writing with a dull pencil and they wouldn't let me. I still wish I would have snuck it in though because I have a feeling I wouldn't have been caught and I ended up getting screwed by not sneaking it in.

When I took the DAT it was still with paper and pencil. I was allowed 1 piece of paper at a time and 1 pencil (apparently I could have cheated with more than 1 piece of paper... what a joke). I ran out of room on my paper during QR and the proctor was gone, I figured she just went to the bathroom or something so I started writing hard and dark to cover up the other writing. My pencil eventually went dull and broke when I was trying to expose more lead with my fingernails and when i looked up to try to get the proctor's attention she was no where to be found, yet again. I spent 15 minutes wandering around the building trying to find her and eventually found her watching TV with some kids. After finally getting a pencil and more paper I had about 5 minutes left and a lot of QR questions that i hadn't even looked at. I ended up with a 17, which I know isn't absolutely horrible, but I had been getting 25-27 in practice tests and I'm sure I would have gotten several more questions correct if I had those 15 minutes back.

I definately let the proctor hear a piece of my mind when I was done and I called the ADA department of testing, and the main prometric office to complain just so there was an official complaint on file if I would have been asked to retake the DAT for a higher QR score.
