I am going to have 2 cats when I start med school, and i am thinking about getting a dog ( a little chihuahua) too. Will I have time for a dog? People have time for families, right? So shoudn't I have time for a dog? Any one else bringing pets to med school?

I'm bringing my cat with me! She is so cute and i love her and there is no way that I would leave her behind in california when i'm across the country 🙂

I'm bringing my two cats. We all go together wherever we go. 🙂

I think you could handle the demands of a pooch in med school as long as you make some pet pals during the first two years, so when clinicals start you won't have worry about on-call, etc.. Find someone else with a dog that is willing to trade "babysitting" duties, and it will give your dog a chance to have a pooch pal as well.

The only concern I would have is finding an apartment that will allow you to have so many pets.

The only thing that I would worry about with getting a dog right when you start med school is that you are going to have to house break it, which could be a pain if you are not around a lot during the day. If you can manage to get that done before you start classes, then it should work out.

My cat is coming with me. She got me through being lonely when I first moved and I am sure she will do it again. It is nice just having something around...you don't quite feel so home alone!

Just so I don't have to sound like Cruella De Ville 😱 on two threads, please see my response to a similar question here:

Basically, I wouldn't recommend getting a dog at this point.

My cat is use to me being gone at work 8-10 hrs a day. I think she will be fine when i am at school. Plus she is great to come home to , she is always excited to see me. I can't imagine med school with out her to waiting for me when i come home.

My cat and my goldfish 🙂

unfortunately i have to bring two freakin' cats....but they're fairly independent

I'm bringing my pet rat. I figure that since I'll be living in an apartment, and not a dorm, it should be ok. And I figure it's probably the best pet to have while in med school - he loves attention, but gets along just fine when he doesn't see me for a while day.

I'm bringing 2 cats and 3 rats. I wouldn't worry about the dog first 2 years, but you probably won't be able to get home to let him/her out as often as you'll need to 3rd year.

How do your cats deal with the rats? I'm asking because I'll be moving home for 2 months this summer, and my sister has a cat, and I kind of don't want to see my rat get eaten.

Don't carry your dog around like paris hilton. Why would anyone want to be anything similar to paris hilton?

I'm bringing my two parrots. It should be okay for the first two years. I'm not sure about after that though. They are high maintenance pets and require a lot of attention. I'm very attached to them and would hate to give them away, but I don't think they'll deal well when I'm gone 80+ hours a week.

I have a dog, a reef tank, a wife and two kids. No problem.
Med school is only as hectic as you make it.

yep. please spare the rest of the intelligent/sane world and don't buy another one of these ******ed dogs.

it is a sad day for people when a dog becomes a fashion accessory. if only paris hilton could be shot and killed and we could put an end to her ******ed-acting lifestyle or alien-like face that the media has tricked people into is believing is good looking.

but if you do pick up the chihuaha, you should send away for your free Von Dutch hat and LV dog-carry purse.

Guess you wouldn't be interested in my sex tape?

J/k.. My brother's wife got a yorkie, it's cute, and they take it everywhere - I kinda wish I could take my dogs everywhere..

I'm taking my cat and my girlfriend. The cat definitely needs more attention, and I couldn't imagine life without her. She's been in the only constant in my life for 16 years now, we've gone through college, work, postbacc, and med school applications. We've lived in three states. You betcha she's coming with me.

Oh yeah, and my girlfriend too. 😉

make sure you check with the housing regulations for the school - some schools don't allow pets... like einstein. dammit!

I have a multi-level rat cage that the rats live in. I take them out to play with them, but they stay in there most of the time. (Don't feel too sorry for them, they have a sweet home) 🙂 When they are out, the cats don't mess with them. My rats are about a year old, so they're not tiny anymore. The cats will come up to them and sniff them and the rats will sniff back. Every single time, if a rat steps forward, the cats back off. It's hilarious. (My rats are all male by the way and I have heard that cats usually know better than to mess with them). I would bet money that if I left the rats out, if anyone got hurt, it would be the cats.

I want to bring my three cats 😀

Taking my cat is a must! She has been through this whole process with me. The mCAT was hard on her, ha ha

Good point. My cat recently got declawed, so I think my rat can probably take him.

wtf is wrong with you people

only dogs qualify as real pets

rats are a vermin problem that people just want to get rid of
cats are basically just long haired rats
gerbils are uclacrewdude's best friend
