Just wondering, how did Broadlawns lose its pod residency. Isn't it one of the main hospitals for the pod students at DMU? Just seems surprising.

The hospital closed the program, they didn't lose it. There was talk about re-opening the program, but it does not make strong financial sense for the hospital or doctors. GME money is give based upon the percentage of Medicare billing. BMC mainly serves uninsured and Medicaid patients, so they don't get much GME money. So to keep the program open, they lose money. The doctors lose money b/c you cannot charge an assistant fee if you have a residency program.

It is the best thing for students not having residents: more cases, patients, and opportunities for students. I've had numerous C level cases and research opportunities that I would never have had anywhere else. That is why I stand firm that currently BMC is the best 4th year clerkship in the U.S.

Yea, I'm sure that with no residents there, it must be a great experience. Even when there were residents there, it was a very good rotation with Dr. Mandracchia. A rotation like that will really prepare a student for externships or for residency.

I really would like to see the program open again because it does have a lot to offer if done properly. But I also understand the financial issues as well.

do they still have a fellowship? or are they starting one?

That is much more likely than a residency. I think it will be awhile b/c the doctors also feel burned by the residents, and the new doctors are just getting settled in. I would guess that if their was interest and a viable candidate, that they would start one.
