I had a friend from high school that was on the Stanford swim team with Turner. Turner was pre-med and aced his classes during freshman year. However, he is a registered sex offender.

Supposedly, his wealthy father (a physician) paid off the judge. The result was a lighter sentence (3 months probation). Is there any way his father can pay off the state of California to eliminate his son's name from the list of sex offenders? Is there any way Turner, now 20, has a chance to get accepted into medical school?

Lol. No.

Disregarding the technicality that he's been expelled by Stanford, he has far too much notoriety now to get into medical schools, esp. given the fact that it's not like they're short on super good applicants. Also that's not how "paying off" works.

Serious question: will Caribbean schools accept him? If not, well, the theory that Caribbean will take in everyone with a pulse and can write a check needs to be revised.

My spouse and I were literally just talking about this over lunch. We discussed if the family had any huge ties could it be swept under and even then, as a sex offender, would any hospital even give this person residency/attending rights.

Furthermore, I asked them (an esq) could the prosecution opt to appeal due to the judge taking 6 years -> 6 months (when the prosecution had already reduced from 13), and depending on the state, it is a good case for judicial misconduct (I think this is the word they said). I wonder if they'll jump.

he's got 99 problems but applying to med school def ain't one... channeling my inner jay-z

he can try caribbean and see if rich daddy can help him out but don't see american schools taking a risk on this guy

I think I read that the judge decided to give him 6 months because anymore would "impact his life".

Because horrendously raping a female while she's unconscious hasn't impacted anyone else's lives. I read his father's "letter" which countered the plaintiff's open letter and was appalled. Basically victimizing the son, saying how sad and messed up he is because of "20 minutes of action" versus 20 years of doing well.

Boy, you're only suffering because you got caught.

I wonder if he'd be feeling such shame if he'd not been caught.

He was sentenced to 6 months in jail and 3 years probation.
He was found guilty of three felonies.

He has zero chance of being admitted to any US medical school or ever being licensed to practice medicine in the US.

When I read that he planned, in ten years to be "in residency to be a surgeon" I LOL'd so hard

Dr. Turner: So we're going to have to put you under for this procedure.

Female patient: You said your name was Dr. Brock Turner? Did you happen to... I'm going to see a different doctor.

It isn't half as bad as his friend's, which includes this gem:
letter linked below said:
But where do we draw the line and stop worrying about being politically correct every second of the day and see that rape on campuses isn’t always because people are rapists.

His father I can almost understand - maybe he just can't believe it of his son despite the evidence. But this woman, his childhood friend, tries to turn rape into a perpetrator-less crime, a simple matter of political correctness. He has a "d'aww" smile, clearly he's not a rapist!

I literally can't even. However, his official mugshot was released finally.

I'm so tired of reading the "let's spin a sexual assault case into poor choices and campus drinking culture" because this poor white, privileged male's future is tarnished enough.

Not standing up for this guy, but you're talking out of your a**. He didn't RAPE her technically by law. Please read the court brief for details.

I feel like "rape" is an acceptable shorthand for "sexually penetrating an intoxicated person with a foreign object and sexually penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object," especially with that "intent to commit rape" thrown in there. Sure, in a courtroom we would have to be more precise with our language, but the discussion would be somewhat hampered if we had to type out all of that crap every time when four letters gets the gist across for the context we are in.

Just as we often say "assault" in discussions when technically the legal charge would be "battery", this is an instance where using the broader colloquial definition doesn't really change the meaning for the purposes of our discussion, and may even make it clearer.

Maybe so but then again, using precise and accurate language is important in medicine as well

So is being able to discuss complex things at a non-technical level. Learning to distinguish between harmful and non-harmful shorthand is also a useful skill.

If there's not a law about it, I've got to imagine almost every U.S. hospital has a policy against hiring any employee with a sex offender record.

Also, to OP, I don't think you can just run around saying daddy paid off the judge because you want to...this isn't some 3rd world country where you can just pass the judge a suitcase full of cash lol

As is using primary sources, where you would discover this was more of a hook-up gone wrong the the dramatization being portrayed in the post I originally mentioned. Maybe this was a difficult read for you but this wasn't too complex

Also, your response of "it's not TECHNICALLY rape" is completely lacking in compassion or respect for the victim's plight. Which is also a pretty important in medicine.
Once again I agree that this guy is a scumbag who I believed received a lesser sentence than he deserved, however I am also a firm believer in factual accuracy. I have no interest in debating that strawman or any other position other than factual accuracy

People who are intoxicated can not give consent. With out consent, it is rape. I am embarrassed that I have to explain this to someone who is presumably female.

How the FBI defines rape: " “Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”

https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/u...ew-rape-definition-frequently-asked-questions

They use that definition for the purposes of collection of national crime statistics. Is that technical enough for you?

Over my dead body at my school.
