Alright so I'm a first year that was making my own anki cards corresponding to my basic science classes. It is now too time consuming and I was considering using a pre made deck like bros to help study for my class and hopefully continue using into new courses for long term retention.

I have a few (probably stupid) questions:

-what do people do with cards they didn't learn about in class? Like if I get about some disease we didn't learn about in class what do you do with that card?

-in general is this advised if I stick with it from now until step 1?

I have not matriculated yet, but I've used Anki quite a few of my grad classes.

In general, I like to use the "Bury Card" feature when I come across a card I don't feel like dealing with.

Making anki cards isnt that time consuming. What I do is I take a picture of the lecture power point slide, and then I make five or six question cards with the power point slide as the answer. I have 3 one hour lectures per day, and it takes me about 2 hours to watch the lecture, and make the cards, for each of the lectures. Then at the end of my day i review all my cards, and using pathoma/first aid/boards and beyond, add or underline some of the high yield facts.

Ive been doing this for a few systems in med school so far, and this has been working for me, but when I started it was slow, and it was hard, but anything new will always be like that. Just stick with it, and in no time you'll be able to make good cards quickly, and you'll love Anki.

The most time efficient way to handle using a pre-made deck is to unsuspend all the cards of a particular tag and then progressively suspend them as you review if they're out of scope.

With regards to the "out of scope" cards. You have two pretty clear cut options: a) brute force it or b) suspend and revisit it when you eventually cover that detail in (presumably another) class. Both strategies have merits, as once you brute force a card it becomes that much easier to learn the concept when it's covered in class. Ward of warning though, you shouldn't be brute forcing more than a handful of cards a day (seriously, 2-3) as it will just end up haunting you when they pile up.

More important than whether or not you brute force or suspend those handful of out of scope cards is that you keep up with your anki load indefinitely. I cannot express how ahead of the curve you will be if you keep up with anki.

Great reply thank you. I was mentally drained last night and just didn't catch on that I had the cards in "random order" as opposed to "show in order as added" which was causing a lot of difficulty. Yeah dealing with seemingly 100s of cards we haven't covered in class is pretty daunting. I think I might just read along in first aid when we start our next class, this class is a lost cause for anki as I always add way too many cards
