Have you thought about D.O. schools?

Yes, but I have good GPA and was hoping for atleast 27. Well 26 is not bad but 5 in verbal is horrible. Well I already sent applications to about 7 schools so will just wait i guess.

I never expected more than 7 in verbal. Actually I worked most of the time on verbal and never got better. May be I need much more work but now as I didn't want to be late, I already applied to about 7 MD schools and 5 DO schools. So don't have any way out, will just wait and see what happens. Ahh stupid verbal.

you need to retake it. see what happens this year, but with a 5V it'll be a challenge to get into an allo school.

I take it you're not from around these parts?
i.e. born in the US?

No, I was born and raised in India. I came to US in 2001. Actually that's why verbal is very hard for me, never spoke english in regular conversation until I came to US. Anyway can't make any excuse because of that.

retake it. a 5 in verbal is a bad thing. just two or three more points will get you some interviews.

I am not going to sugar-coat my response. You need to retake. Last year, I applied with a 5v/10p/10b and a 3.85 GPA from UC Berkeley. I received one interview out of 25 schools I applied to and no acceptance.

It is possible to improve your verbal, trust me. I took the MCAT 4 times and scored 5-7 on verbal each time. I worked my ass off for the aug mcat, tried some new skills and used a new approach. I finally ended up with a 9. PM me if you need advice on how to improve your verbal. I am more than happy to help

Trust me. As a fellow Indian, being South Asian is definitely not going to help your application. I think you did well enough in BS and PS to make retaking the test the best option. Looking at your BS and PS scores indicates that you are probably not as bad of a reader as you think. I mean... you must be somewhat skilled in reading comprehension to pull info from the passages in these secitons to score as well as you did right?

Don't let being a non-native english speaker hold you back. I have several friends who were in your situation and brought all of their scores up after retaking it. They started reading a variety of english literature like prose etc... It may be time consuming, but it is the best way to adjust to different styles of writing.

If you can squeeze out a seven or eight and bump your BS to an 11, I think you have a good shot (if everything else is up to par). Maybe do Americorps...that's what I am doing now and at least it will make your app more interesting. Otherwise, I suggest you pack your bags for a caribean or Indian med school, or go DO.

GOBUCKY!

my verbal went down also...from an 8 to yeck,,,however my other stuff stayed about the same...do u think schools will look at my previous 8 or take my new crappy score?

Honestly. Staying the same in 2 sections but going down overall is about the worst thing that can happen on a retest. That is why you aren't supposed to sit for the exam unless you are SURE you will go up or at least break even.

I agree, you need to retake with a 5 in verbal.

First time I took MCAT I got 6 in verbal 10 in BS and 11in PS. I took the MCAT again and I didn't improve in verbal but my other scores improved. VR 06, PS 14, BS 11. This time I am applying to DO schools also.

Yeah, well I have already applied to 7 MD schools and 5 DO schools because I didn't want to be late. So anyway will wait for their decisions. Well may be going to DO will be worth than wasting one more year of life and spending all money. But anyway its now wait and watch game. Otherwise will start preparing for April MCAT.

The quote is " In like Flynn"...based on the actor that used to get into alot of girls pants.....sorry just wanted to let you know.

I got an interview from an allopathic school(even before my application was complete) and I am waiting for other schools(My applications are not complete yet). Since you already applied, see how it goes. If you don't hear from any school by end of this year, start preparing for next MCAT.

i started with a 4v on the 3R and ended up with a 8 in april. I think that doing ok on the verbal is dependent on working passages(get the EK101) and most importantly your state of mind during the section. You have to be calm, confident and focused to do well.

I think some DO schools may give you some love cause you arent a native english speaker.

Good luck

Yeah I know I started with 3 on the 3R. Well I already applied so will wait for decisions otherwise I will start preparation for April MCAT. Never wanted to take this test again but well what else I can do. Yeah if I get into DO schools I will definitely give it a serious thought instead of going through all these again.

The quote you are referring to is distinct from the one I am referring to, which is a 1967 film starring James Coburn.

An unintentionally comedic James Bond knock-off.

I got a VR 6, BS 9, PS 10 in april and I did 2 months of pure verbal studying and practice. I did all 7 aamc practice mcats and finished the 2 examkrackers verbal books. I got VR 6, BS 9, PS 10 in august. Have no idea what happened. I was getting 8-10 on the aamc tests. I applied to 23 MD schools just a few days ago and about to apply to some DO schools. Good luck to the both of us!!
