Hey everybody,
Im currently a senior and pursuing BS in biochem. I will be graduating this DEC but i have low overall GPA and science GPA. So, My question is having this degree will elevate my chance of getting into pharm school? In addition to a good pcat scores + LOR + Work exp. + Early application. Let's say my GPA is 2.50. What the chance I will be accepting ? I will be applying this Aug/Sept. 2011 to be consider early applicant.

What's your PCAT score (if you've taken it)? Unless your PCAT score is very competitive, a 2.50 cumulative GPA (and roughly the same sGPA?) is going to kill you. Apply broadly because that's barely at the minimum standard for pretty much every school in the country.

It's going to be a really long uphill climb.

Without knowing more specifics (pre-req gpa, where you're applying, PCAT score) it's hard to even give a guess as to your chances, other than to say not good. People sometimes do get in with a 2.5, but it's the exception, biochem degree or not.

Edit: Well my post was almost completely redundant...

If his cum is 2.5 and his science is not too far off that (his own post) then I doubt his PR gpa is much better eh?

Maybe not, but being a biochem major maybe some of the upper level stuff really wrecked his gpa? Yeah, probably a long shot, but his hopes are kinda slim anyway.

I got accepted after my 2nd round of applications (got accepted to 2 places too!) after I finished my BS in Biochem because my GPA was so crappy. Don't lose hope!

My Pcat scores is in the 50s range. The school i want to go is U.T memphis in TN. I guess i have this summer and the fall to raise my GPA. I think the max i can raise is roughly 2.7, assume i made A's. But, do you guys recommend i should apply pharm school this Fall anyways ?

I say it's still worth a shot if you've got the money. If you don't make it in this year and you apply next year and you've improved your grades and your application overall, they'll see this improvement as a very good thing. That said, make sure you actually have good study habits and can make good grades. The 1st year science classes aren't exactly what I would consider blowoff.

That is what you get for becoming a biochem major. It made your gpa undergo an exponential depreciation. You need to do an SMP....whoops....i forgot I was in the pharmacy thread. Dude, retake the PCAT.

I have a B.S. in Biochem, and a "subpar" GPA myself (3.0 cum, under 3.0 Sci/Math), yet I am lucky enough to be starting Pharmacy School this fall. My application isn't the most fantastic thing in the world, but I showed admissions that I was more than a number between 0 and 4. If you're truly passionate about the profession, you can do the same.

An important point to remember is that a lot of schools have their "minimum cumulative" at 2.50 but a soft floor at 3.0. So your 3.0 cumulative was enough to get you looked at more thoroughly. There's a big difference b/n 3.0 and 2.5. A lot more than 0.5 units on a number line that is for sure.

Thanks for your info. You give me hopes !! What is your PCAT scores btw ?

Good point. Personally I researched old threads and contacted schools to see whether their listed minimum GPA was indeed the difference between the desk or the waste-bin for my application. In fact, the school I got into lists minimum 3.0 cum and pre-req GPA ( I highly doubt I met the later). This forum gave me some great insight through past applicants on which schools consider GPA the holy grail, and which ones only see it as a part of the equation.

I scored a 79 composite with mid 90's in Bio and Chem. Apparently I don't know engrish :meanie:
