This is a heads up for some of you young aspiring dr’s

If you know you want to do medicine there are a few schools that have honors programs for high school students that want to go into medicine. They are usually called Med scholars program or something like that. These often come with an undergrad scholarship. As long as you maintain a about a 3.5 and get a certain score on the MCAT you are almost guaranteed admission to their med school. They often set up shadowing experiences and seminars and volunteering for you. Some let you knock off a year of undergrad. They are sometimes also called 7 or 8 year medical school.

I had a friend do this it sounded like a great experience. Between her AP classes and a few summer classes she started med school in what would have been most people’s senior year of undergrad.

This site has a few of the programs (among other types).

This is an awesome post! I went through a BS/MD program in Rootstown, OH along with my wife and we graduated from the University of Akron. The other advantages in addition the streamlined and directed education, the guaranteed acceptance, is that the one we went through was significantly less expensive than alternative programs and schools that we considered. Also, our program is a 6-year program so, our undergraduate experience was shortened by two years as well. This has helped us down the road with extra years for fellowships etc without feeling like we are losing even more years in training.

With this said, many people who started with us did not finish the program because of academic difficulties, medical issues, change of heart, and many other issues.

Overall, we would recommend the type of program for those who are certain that they want to commit themselves to medicine.

Cheers,
TL
